Browse Forums General Discussion Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 2Sep 27, 2016 9:24 am I'm afraid I have no expertise in this area but am also interested in the answer to this. I would love a deck but have no desire to look after any more wood so I would be curious to know whether anybody has used Hardiplank for decking and what the result was. Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 3Sep 27, 2016 12:36 pm Personally I think it sounds like a shocking solution. But at the same time I can't come up with a better one either. Our 20 yr old timber deck is similar although all exposed and never under cover. Originally it was painted but that started to look crappy only after a few years and it now looks really bad with a fair lot of cracks and rot starting to creep in. Concrete slab & tiles on our next place for sure. Stewie Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 4Sep 27, 2016 12:40 pm Hi Liliana, You couldn't just use Hardiplank by it's self without full support underneath,it's only 7 mm thick and would break.I know it's soft in itself but with a few coats of paving paint would give it a tough skin.If you want a deck but don't want the upkeep of timber they make a composite decking board now but I believe it is hot to walk on as is that awful cabots aquadeck stuff they keep promoting. Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 5Sep 27, 2016 12:45 pm Why do you think its shocking Stewie,do you think it would wear-paving paint is pretty tough and not hard to recoat, or you wouldn't like the idea of wider boards,or is it that you just like the natural look of timber? Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 6Sep 27, 2016 2:53 pm The thought of laying an FC sheet product like a Hardies whatever over a beautiful timber like Jarrah is enough to make a fellow chippy wince. In the absence of anything else and getting over my dread at the thought, a product like that would be a) easy to install b) easy to paint c) easy to maintain As mentioned above though I'd go for something like compressed sheets even though it would be more expensive and add quite a bit more load to the sub-floor framing. Stewie Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 7Sep 27, 2016 2:57 pm Or can you rip up the Merbau part and lay Jarrah on that part only to match the other older part ? Or is that the part that the walls are built over ? Stewie Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 8Sep 27, 2016 5:48 pm I hear you Stewie,no the walls are over all of it, and I don't want to go sabre sawing the whole lot out. I think I may have thought of a solution though.I have a 1200 W sliding fly door which leads out to 8 steps going down. All the risers are at 190 and the top one is onto the deck.If i was to go over the top with new decking the top riser would be 210.,but if I was to cut out the existing decking just in front of the door and recess a coir mat in and trim with some brass angle i think it would look ok.and still have my 190. Peed off.The old jarrah had been down about 15 years, and the newer merbau about 3 and both had aged to around the same colour.Wasn't till I sanded it i realised it had been Jarrah, and of course came up like a patchwork quilt after I oiled it. I think if I was to go over the top with new decking I would run it the other way,and if I sealed the bottom of the new boards first (for cupping) do you think I could get away with 1 screw in the middle, and at about 900C given that I am screwing it to the old deck which is really sound and flat? Probably. But why use screws ? I'd prefer to whip out my nailgun and fire in some 50mm brads at every 450mm. Less noticeable than screw heads. As long as the existing decking is secured down hard , nails should be fine. Stewie Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 11Sep 27, 2016 10:31 pm Mm,be ok wouldn't it,not as if the old deck is going to shrink and cause popping. Could always run a bead of silicon as well. Don't know about you but I am using silicon as an adhesive more and more these days in certain situations. Re: radical idea for deck rejuvenation Thoughts please. 12Sep 28, 2016 12:29 pm Horses for courses. I prefer to use a good grade construction adhesive like Sikkaflex where glue is needed and only use Silicon where a sealant is necessary. I must admit though, silicon does stick like the proverbial to a blanket. Stewie You must be new to the internet. You're also the only person anyone here has ever heard of washing their garage wall.
