Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 11, 2016 4:27 pm I am in the process of a big decision on buying a property to renovate a little and hopefully rent out Around half of the floor in property is tiled and the other half is varnished pine flooring, approx 3 mm gap between the boards My issue and concern is…. There has been 3 x cats and 1 dog living inside the property There is a real bad smell of cat urine and cat @@@@ in the house and I noticed cat urine/@@@@ on the tiles and also the wooden floor Am I right in saying that the cat urine/poo will of soaked into the grout between the tiles? ( Not porous tiles) If so what would be a solution to fix this? Im not sure atall but I was thinking I may have to dig all the old grout out and regrout but im not sure if this would fix the problem, I really don’t want to pull all the old grout out if there is another way I could try and rid this terrible smell. im also concerned that cat urine may of got under the skirting boards which could turn into a nightmare! The wooden floor as above has got approx 3 mm gaps in it and im also concerned the cat urine has soaked between the boards even though the floor has been varnished, any suggestions on this? I was hoping that if I resanded the floors then a good coat of varnish and make sure plenty gets in between the gaps this may sort the smell issue. I will obviously give the place a good clean with some kind of products before I attempt sanding back the floors, any tips on a good cleaning product would be appreciated In my opinion there is not many worse smell than cats urine, I would never have one of these in my property! Any tips or advice would be much appreciated Re: Help Please! Cat Urine On Tiling, Smells bad..... 2Jun 13, 2016 1:02 am We had a similar problem and it's not as big a problem as you think. We didn't have to deal with tiles though, just wood floors and skirtings. You need a cleaning product that will break down the smelly component of the urine. It's either uric acid or ammonia that stinks. I used a saturated solution of hot water and sodium percarbonate. I used about 200g/l but half that would probably do. Good luck. Re: Help Please! It seems to work well though you need to do repeat applications to get rid of older smells. If pets are still present they are less likely to revisit the same spot. Whatever you do , only use a light dusting or you will be smelling the surgical spirit for days. DO NOT use bleaches and general cleaning solutions. These will only mask the smell and pets will revisit the same spot and carry on adding to the issue. Test on an area of flooring that is out of sight before using on areas of concern to make sure that the surface of the floor is not discoloured by the spray . Re: Help Please!
