Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 4Jul 22, 2007 8:22 pm I don't like the idea - steam from the bathroom would be my main concern. Plus - when guests come over and your WIR is a mess - it's easier just to close the door Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 5Jul 22, 2007 11:51 pm I think another factor would be your lifestyle.
My wife starts work really early a couple of days each week, and at the time she gets up to get ready, II don't have to get up for another 2 hours. If she doesn't close the ensuite door properly, then the noise & light wake me up & keep me awake. It's not a problem on the days when we are up together, but I think there would be major issues for pwople with different working hours, or shift workers. Yes that would be a problem. However my partner and I share the same work hours, drive together to work and use the ensuite at the same time. I am wondering if the steam can be addressed by adequate ventilation ?? We are keeping the wardrobe separate i.e. b.i.r. The other main consideration is the privacy factor - not sure how I feel about waking up to the hubby singing in the shower . Beetle Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 7Jul 23, 2007 8:58 am I'd go for seperate if it was me .... sometimes bathrooms have a rather ummmm revolting odour especially if someone is unwell.... even if they close the toilet door ...smells do drift and I'd be really not wanting smells like that in my nice bedroom ....
The ensuite in the house we are going to build is through the WIR's and then a door to the bathroom with a seperate toilet .... I'm happy with that many doors between me and the toilet Another undelicate thought ... if you're sick in the middle of the night, you don't want to be running to the spare bathroom you'll use the closest one, and ****** in bed listening to your parter being unwell without some doors between you both is also not what I'd think I want in my nice bedroom .... Just my 2 cents Fiona Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 8Jul 23, 2007 5:18 pm Simmond's display in Keysborough'Toscana' has a openplan bathroom with a spa on a 'stage'...It was funny when we visited a neighbour who built that home actually dont use the bathroom... they went for the extras only for 'resale' value. Unfortunately the bathroom is set between 2 pillars and it may not be a good option to put in doors.
We were lucky they had heaps of room between 2 coloumns adjacent to the bathroom door for cavity sliding doors. spending about $700 for the change. Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 9Jul 23, 2007 5:28 pm I think they LOOK great, but as far as practicality goes, I don’t think they fit the bill.
Unless you like to hang at Nudist Camps on the weekend! That’s what it would be like, NO privacy at all. I know marriage and close relationships are one thing……but please, there are some things you like to keep to yourself. (Well I do anyway!) My design teacher had one in her home, in there early days of design for the bathrooms. I didn’t think much of it then, and I still don’t now. BUT……if I lived on my own….I couldn’t think of a better bathroom to have! However there is something about the open design that is attractive .. (minus toilet odour). Perhaps we are being influenced by our Thailand holiday where the bathroom was a hop skip and jump away from the bed. I am probably being totally unrealistic and should leave the holiday dreams where they belong and opt for the practicalities of everyday life .... but oh the fantasy is so nice Beetle Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 11Jul 24, 2007 10:30 am I think our bathroom is 'open plan'....well, it doesn't have a door on it, anyway!
I have thought about the fact that I might get woken up by my partner having a shower in the morning but hopefully it won't be too bad. Our first home had a bathroom right near the main bedroom and I coped ok with that. I love the look of the open plan bathroom....aren't most houses these days like that anyway?? Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 12Jul 24, 2007 7:06 pm I like a bit of privacy in the bathroom so I'd definitely put the doors on. I think the open plan looks nice but it's a bit impractical. Maybe you could use bifold doors, then you could have them out of the way for a nice open look and closed when you want some privacy. Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 13Jul 24, 2007 8:15 pm Doors were not an option with our builder, however we asked and we received!
I have to have doors to the ensuite as there is a 2 hour difference between our showering times. Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 14Jul 24, 2007 8:50 pm You know the best way to have both?
I do think the open plan looks good……nice and modern! To me they are open for all sorts of decoration and design, if the room is large enough; you could hang some really nice sheer fabrics that flow in the breeze. When you want privacy, you pull them closed, they will provide just enough privacy to do what you need, then pull them to the side when done. But you would have to use REALLY NICE sheer fabrics to get the LOOK! Also the room needs to be large and very open, doors off to a veranda……that sort of thing. Very swish!!! BUT this does not solve the problem with time lapses between couples getting up and showering! My teacher had glass walls with a glass sliding door into hers, closed but visible……I think there’s a name for that sort of thing?? But we won’t go into that…… Just thought I’d throw a really trendy and upmarket option in for you all. I love the idea of flowing sheers but maybe shutters would prove to be a good idea if noise is an issue.
I am now thinking of chosing a semi integrated design separated by lime wash shutters - that way we get the best of both worlds. The builder is back from his overseas holiday today so it is crunch time. I'll let you know what we decide and will post the final plan when he has finished bringing us back down to earth. Beetle Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 16Jul 26, 2007 8:57 am We're doing the semi-integrated concept, as I wrote earlier in this thread, the bathroom is off the master bedroom but through the WIR (which are 2 boxes either side of a walkway)... the toilet is a completely seperate room off one side of the bathroom with a full door but we're also adding a semi-solid door to the bathroom itself where it meets with the walkway - like a full length shutter - just to give that bit more privacy if you want it ....
This is the house we are going to build, with McDonald Jones Homes .... we have a couple of changes to make but none affect the WIR's/bathroom for the master bedroom.... http://www.mcdonaldjoneshomes.com.au/de ... signid=179 It also will help stop the steam from the double shower coming out of the bathroom into the WIR's and the rest of the bedroom ..... I love the look of the open plan bedroom/bathrooms but I know I'll enjoy using my semi/3/4-integrated bathroom more Fiona Re: Open plan bedrooms - are they a fashion fad? 17Jul 26, 2007 12:34 pm I guess it depends on what I am going for, a $7 -10 000 bath, a $5 000 sink etc and I'll want open plan to show it off. Standard builders range - hide it.
