Uncovered decks are relatively easy for the novice builder, a pergola on the other hand needs a reasonable amount of building knowledge, as davinci said the downside to poor construction can be fatal Re: pergola building 4Jan 27, 2009 8:24 pm At the very least pick up the "Deck and Pergola" book by Allan Staines from Bunnings - it has a wealth of info on specifications, construction methods etc, which should reduce your chances of building a death trap. Also suggest getting onto *.com.au for more detailed help.

Being a structural element you will need to submit your plans to council for approval. If you decide to sell you will need the approval anyway.
