Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 May 15, 2016 10:11 pm Hi all, The adventure of my owner builder experience begins. My drawings and plans were approved by CDC in January and the tenants are moving out this coming week. I'm lucky enough to be self employed (salary will be cut dramatically these 6-18 months but hopefully saving in being a OB myself) So am I ready? Hell no!!!!!!!! What am I up to: - Still trying to finish my OB course online - hard to juggle with a 2.5 and 3 months old at home. - Trying to learn everything with the plans - my dad is a sparky and he is helping a lot with the project. We met up with a company last week with concrete and formwork and I realised I really need to know the ins and outs of everything that is going on - Emailing tons of places for quotes and getting the sense that this industry is more "please call me" instead of "please email me" - Read up about Loose-fill asbestos insulation program (http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/T ... ation.page?). My place definitely has asbestos but I have been told that not many homes in NSW have had this specific type of asbestos found. After getting stuck into these engineering drawings I realised I need to learn/understand so much stuff it's not funny - I think it will be though when I move in - who knows when. My first post. I'm going to keep ranting on and on and ask for advice here and there. Interested to know what termite protection people having been using? I just found Termimesh online. Hope u have good tradies? You could start with putting your plan up so we know what you are constructing and then keep us all updated with photos. Termimesh is what I have heard. Anyone else have any ideas? By the ways how did you find your tradies? Re: Gladesville - NSW 6May 27, 2016 9:29 pm Good luck mate! Being a tradie myself I should mention to look at the written quotes you get back. If the quotes stipulate everything in fine detail so you know exactly what you get for your money, you should go with it. Never go for the cheap quote that looks like it was written on a paper napkin. You'll always regret it. Those guys write a cheap quote to get the job in the hope they'll hit you with extras. And it usually leads to a very sour experience. Most jobs wind up having extras, but at least a thorough more expensive quote limits how many extras you may come across. Just my 2c Re: Gladesville - NSW 9Jun 04, 2016 12:51 pm Thanks Mozda. I've had one carpenter coming back to me with 3 sentences and a cost - definitely not going with them. Personally, I'm finding really hard to get quotes. Currently, I have one quote each for my concrete and carpenter work but I'll like to get at least 2-3 quotes. Understand there are probably tons of work out there, I'm getting calls from people, they'll come visit the site and I send them my plans but I'll never hear from them again. It's actually rather frustrating in a way. Will be following this one. What is the current house and setting? Looks like a steep block as well. Do you have any plants or shrubs you'd be willing to part with before the Demo? I'm really interested about the structure of the build. Do you have a engineering plan showing the support of the piers and slab? Looks like it will be tricky. Keep the pics coming mate.
