Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 21, 2016 3:45 pm I'm at the frame up stage of building my house and the builder as put the internal door in the garage in the top corner (entry side) of the room rather than the original spot of being in the middle. I appreciate that traditional layout is to put them in the corner as there is a bit more space but we want to use the rear wall for a storage and to have symmetry with the door on the other side of the hall moved it to the centre so that when you exit the garage you can go straight into the opposing door (which goes to the master bedroom). So now my wife is second guessing the central placement and is thinking about keeping in the top left corner. As we've never lived in a house with a double garage before we are wonder what works for people. We have two cars and will have two kids. So does anyone see an issue with an door opening outwards in the centre of the garage or do we reduce the size of the storage to fit the door into the corner? Even if you don't use the second car too often, it may also deter buyers later down the track if they see it as a problem. Also, doors opening into the skinny hallway seems a bit dangerous too. Re: Garage internal door placement help 3Mar 21, 2016 5:01 pm What is the overall size of your garage? Just thinking about how much room you will have around your cars? I would be going into the corner or offset like the other side if you want storage all the way across. Going around the car and entering the house right about where the side mirror is on your car will be annoying, especially with bags and kids. From the inside, I like it further along the wall, which gives a nice wall for artwork/storage/coat rack or whatever rather than having a door right in the middle of a wall. Re: Garage internal door placement help 4Mar 21, 2016 5:22 pm I agree with the others, it would be better in the corner. It would be annoying to have to navigate around the first car to get to it he second car. And also like the others said having to go around the cars with bags would be very annoying... Re: Garage internal door placement help 6Mar 21, 2016 6:47 pm If you've got a standard double, then there is hardly any room to get car doors open anyway, so best not to make it more squishy with a door half way. I suggest putting it in the same position as the external pedestrian door, and you can still have storage.
Re: Garage internal door placement help 7Mar 21, 2016 8:45 pm rocketship What is the overall size of your garage? . The garage is 6m deep by 5.8m wide. GOD DAMNIT PEOPLE! I wanted you to agree with me not with my wife. Ok, how about this as a compromise, what if I move the door to be 700mm out from the left wall as per the external door on the bottom of the garage. That way I can still fit storage in along the rear wall and the front of the car won't compromise the exit of the garage (this is how our current garage is setup). Thoughts?
