Browse Forums Paving & Concreting Re: What's your double driveway width? 3Jan 19, 2009 11:11 am Our garage frontage is 5.7m and we took up every bit of that for our driveway width at that point, tapering to meet the crossover width at the boundary.
4m is a bit squeezy, but you might get away with it if you have two small cars. We have a Falcon and a small hatchback, and can only just manage to get in and out of the doors without stepping in the garden beds (OK, so they're just dirt now, but they will be garden beds...) to the sides. Re: What's your double driveway width? 4Jan 19, 2009 11:17 am Yikes!
Looks like I might be in a bit of trouble then doesn't it. My garage door measures 4.8m so I can't even have it as wide as that. At this stage it's looking like I'll have to go with the 4m. I wonder if the council is responsible for that limit? I'm still interested to hear the bottom widths of a few other drives...some just don't look THAT wide! Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Still so much more to do..... Re: What's your double driveway width? 5Jan 19, 2009 11:22 am From where I build, I need council approval for doing the driveway (the crossover bit). My council's DCP states a recommended 3m. But I have seen a much wider crossover in my area. In my original DA, I only had 3.5m. I am putting in an application to increase to 4m for my crossover and then extend to the width of my double garage. I have seen crossover to the entire width of the double garage width. That's just way too wide to me. I've been told the maximum width I can have is 4m. I want to be able to park 2 cars side by side on the driveway. How narrow can I make the driveway yet still fit 2 cars side by side? If possible, I'd like to make it slightly less than 4m. Any help would be very much appreciated! Is the maximum width of 4 metres just for the crossover, the length of the driveway on the footpath or the entire length of the driveway (up to jsut before the garage). I assume you can taper out to your hearts content once you are inside your property boundary. Inside the property, it is just about the hard area versus soft area ratio over your entire site. The 4m limit is applicable only to the width of the driveway up against the footpath. I definitely plan on widening it as much as I can to fit in with the curved edge I want. The 4m mark is slightly to the left of that blue line - where a small amount of dirt is covering the footpath. If I have to make it start at the 4m point, I won't like the angle of that curve as much. I realise now that I never should have planted a garden bed on that right side but I wanted to grow some sort of hedge between me and my neighbour. Re: What's your double driveway width? 11Jan 19, 2009 12:30 pm Have you considered a convex, rather than concave, curve on that edge? It'll give you more room. That's what we ended up doing to maximise the width. It wasn't my first choice, but it works and I'm happy with how it turned out.
It's hard to tell from the angle of this photo, but it curves out on the right to meet up with the far edge of the pillar: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We'll have a path from the front door to the footpath, and a garden bed between path and driveway, with the letter box sited within the bed. We had to have a 500mm planting strip on the left-hand side - it's an estate requirement - which is why we didn't go all the way to the side boundary. I was around that side of the woods the other day Kek and saw the porch getting assembled, looks like its going to be really nice. Have you seen that some of the houses on hawkstowe parade dont have the 500mm side strip? I wonder how strict they are with that sort of stuff. And I thought they had to be a dark color, again there are plenty of whiter colored ones about. I think we'll go dark simply because someone who builds cars should never have a white driveway but makes you wonder whats in the rules that could be ignored to make your choices easier. Re: What's your double driveway width? 13Jan 19, 2009 1:12 pm Thanks kek. No, I hadn't considered a convex curve. Admittedly that would create more room but I just don't like the way it would look with my house. I think I'm just going to have to settle for a greater angled concave curve. It's just me here at the moment so only one car but I'm mainly doing this for resale value.
There's minimal extra room inside my garage so I know that an Astra and a Camry can fit (snuggly) side by side. If I make it at the 4 m mark, they should just fit outside.... I hope! Next house.....I'm getting a bigger garage and a greater setback from the neighbour boundary Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Still so much more to do..... Some things you can get away with....but Stockland do property audits now and then to check on whether everybody's complying with the covenants. Bottom line, they don't have much power to enforce them. Driveway colours are the main thing that people get wrong, and they can be ordered to paint or colour them to meet requirements. Whether the owners take any notice is a whole other thing. Our front porch is seriously over-built.... but that's my husband for you. I'm hoping it'll be finished by Wednesday. He may not be quick, but it isn't going to fall down. Sorry for the hijack, Bella.... Re: What's your double driveway width? 15Jan 20, 2009 4:02 pm I forgot to put this in!
My driveway is 5.4m wide... Re: What's your double driveway width? 16Jan 21, 2009 7:43 pm In case anybody is wondering how it went today....
The dig out has been completed. I decided to keep the dug out soil as I need a lot of fill on my block...I just didn't think the pile would be so big! I'm not sure when it will be poured, hopefully I find out tomorrow. At this stage, it's looking like Friday, Monday or Tuesday. The sooner the better if you ask me! Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Still so much more to do..... Re: What's your double driveway width? 17Jan 21, 2009 7:47 pm LOL, Bella, are they going to box it on the day of pouring????
Or are they coming back in-between to do that. They will lay the reo and the chairs (for the reo to sit on) on the day, but i thought he or his guys would be coming back to box it all off for you and make sure you're happy with it before they pour? Re: What's your double driveway width? 18Jan 21, 2009 7:58 pm I also thought they would've boxed it up today but the concreter told me they will be back on the day of pouring to do that as it only takes 20 minutes or so. He said the concrete will arrive about an hour later so I guess that gives me plenty of extra time to make any last minute adjustments. I was pretty clear in telling him exactly what I want today so I'm sure it will all work out fine. My only worry after that will be trying to keep the feral children in the area off my new driveway. I'm contemplating buying some of that orange barricade mesh to put up as a deterrent. The last thing I want is for it to be defaced in any way. Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Re: What's your double driveway width? 19Jan 23, 2009 9:09 am I was woken up by a phone call at 6.30am this morning and I'm very happy to report that my driveway has finally been poured!!!

It's dried out quite a lot since this first picture so it's a bit lighter in colour now. I'm still undecided about the stipple effect which was necessary to make it non-slip. Hopefully in time, it will become less obvious. Overall I'm pretty happy with the result and am now only waiting for the sealant to be applied over the weekend. I think I've made the right choice with the colour as it seems to match my charcoal roof tiles perfectly. One thing's for sure, it's made me want to finish my entire front garden NOW! Oh well, one thing at a time will have to do! Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Still so much more to do..... Thanks again for this information.
