Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 15, 2009 8:40 pm The wall colour (really unsure here as I had never used Wattyl and the samples weren't clear) is Purest White. I was afraid of going more grey in case the colour appeared blue tinged. Should i have chosen a light grey for the walls and white for the ceilings and archs and skirts?
I am after advice for the bathrooms too but I'll do the main living first : ) Thanks so much for any advvice!! My husband has no interest at all and my friends not really into decorating. I have no one to bounce things off except reading my home magazines!! Thanks!! All I can say is, you have exceptional taste! I love all your ideas and think they will be just stunning! I’ll be VERY impressed if it all comes together as I have pictured it. WELL DONE indeed! Can’t wait to see photos. I don’t come across this sort of decoration often from my clients where I live, I wish I could see more of it! I looked at your site and you do lovely decorating!!
What's your opinion on the wall colours i have chosen? Is the Purest White going to be the right shading for the blacks and greys and timbers I'm using? I'm worried it's going to be too yellow or beige. i Really need a neautral almost grey tinged white but without it looking blue. Thanks!! I would like to see you stay with the Purest White or something similar. I’m hesitant to say go ahead with greyish walls and white trims. I think from what you have told us your selections/furniture needs to stand out and be the focal point of any room in your home. By painting the walls and trims different colours you may pull the focal point away. Also to have that look, walls and trims in contrasting colours this is the BEST way it works IMO. You need wide skirting and arks, with ornate cornices. Then is works beautifully! Are you having them? Can't wait to see it come together, hope PD get their act together for you soon!
I like the idea of the walnut table...but the chairs stump me. You already have so much black, so I tend to think white might be better. However, knowing you have small children.....will white leather definitely wipe clean??? Re: Some tips and advice!! 8Jan 17, 2009 12:33 pm Thanks so much Michelle!! Purest White it is then!! I did option the larger trims and cornices etc... I think though your right about the wallpaper and furnishings standing out against the white though. I'll keep it as I first chose. Thanks so much for looking at the colours for me : )
I'm with you with the white leather. Sometimes I think my kids are animals at the dinner table. Food flys around like theres no tomorrow!! Has anyone had white leather? Can it absorb stains? does it clean well? Decisions Decisions!! It's so much fun though!! Re: Some tips and advice!! 9Jan 17, 2009 12:39 pm I probably wouldn’t have white if I had young children.
I’m sooo glad to be past that stage of my life! Get a sample of the white leather and give the TEST! That should put your mind as ease. Food flys around like theres no tomorrow!! Has anyone had white leather? Can it absorb stains? does it clean well? Decisions Decisions!! It's so much fun though!! That can depend on the finish on the leather. A buffed and corrected grain, pigmented and protected leather with the urethane finish, is the most stain resistant and easiest to care for. The corrected grains are used for hides that have a few blemishes. They sand off the original grain and stamp a new grain into the surface. This fills up most of the imperfections and is less likely to collect soils in the imperfections. The pigment is like a layer of flexible paint that gives the leather the colour. The paint is easily marked and softens with body contact. The chemicals in the sweat and soiling can damage the pigment, so they generally put a layer of clear polyurethane over the pigment to protect the pigment. This type of finish will resist spills of normal beverages, providing they are cleaned up quickly. It wont resist inks and the like. Even hot coffee can stain it permanently if it is not cleaned up immediately. Hair dye is another thing that I have had to contend with when professionally cleaning leather lounges. The 17 year old daughter was left at home with the parents's new white leather lounge and decided that was as good a time as any to dye her hair purple. I have had to deal with a similar one for a budding rock star who dyed his hair orange. In both these cases we had to get through the urethane and lift off the very top layer of pigment and then re-apply the protection creme treatment. The moral of this story is that even a protected leather can still stain and it is very expensive to fix. But, it is the most durable of all the leather finishes. When you first get it, buy a Fenice or Leathermaster starter kit and apply some protection creme treatment youself. The kit comes with some cleaner and some more protection creme to help you maintain it. Wipe it over with a soft damp cloth at least once a month and about every three to six months use the cleaning kit on all the body contact areas and then about every eighteen months have it professionally cleaned. If you let it go too long the urethane gets worn through and it starts to crack. Once this happens the soils get into the pigment layer and start to damage it. Once that happens, that is the beginning of the end of your lovely leather lounge. You can get unprotected leathers but these are a disaster waiting to happen. Aniline, Nubuck to name just two, are unprotected leathers and are very absorbent. They feel lovely to touch and sit on, but that is because they lack the urethane coating. Any little spill with any type of fluid, even plain water can cause the dyes to move and you will have water spots that look like dark rings where the dyes have disolved in the water and moved sideways with the water. I have seen some pigmented leatthers that do not have the urethane layer. The paint itself gets dirty and when you clean it, the paint is removed. I came across one like thi sa few months ago. It was less than two years old and was ruined. It was not abused, they didn't have kids, they hadn't even spilled anything on it. It was just getting soiled and they wanted it cleaned. the paint was cleanig off so tey rang the manufacturer who said "yes that particular leather doesn't have a urethane finish so that it retaiins a more natural feel" When asked how do we clean it they simply said "Oh you don't get it professionally cleaned you just wipe it" Unfortunately, wiping with a damp cloth did nothing for it. The manufacturer just walked away from it and said they shouldn't have got it dirty. ?????? Leather or fabric lounges will get dirty. They will all need to be cleaned at some stage. So be careful when buying leather or fabric. Ask the questions on maintenance and get the answers in writing. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Thank you so much for the effort.
