Some more dead/yellow/dry patches have appeared not on the edges but in the middle of my lawn? Still no concern? The majority is still green. The grass just needs to grow out. Don't be concerned at this early stage with mowing. If you let it clump and spread it will colonize the dead zones. Keep in mind that council strips and parks use this grass and rarely water or tend to these areas apart from the first couple of weeks. Zoysia should thrive once left to strike and develop in the top soil. As you know already, the majority is going well, so don't be alarmed with the dead zones. Zoysia is also quite resilient to pests and disease so it is just some areas of turf that might have been cut or damaged between cutting, transport and laying. My tip... Concerns? 10Feb 10, 2016 7:02 pm I have this with my Empire Zoysia as well. I'd recommend getting a lawn grub and lawn beetle spray bottle from bunnings/masters and doing your lawn in that first to rule out grubs. I found a single lawn beetle dead after I did my lawn. Secondly, to recover, I found watering helped but not much. Try some fertilizer. I again used the hose in stuff from bunnings/masters and it worked OK. Grass is growing back, but slowly. I also found that it occurs where the grass touches concrete. I can think of two reason why it does it around the edge of my house (I have an exposed terminte barrier, basically a concrete strip) - Chemicals leaching from the concrete. - Concrete gets hot, heat kills the grass. In winter it is less of a problem, but in summer I need to water it a lot to prevent it dying. Also tried a wetting agent to see if I could keep the water in the ground longer, but it didnt help. Interested if anyone else has any remedies. My Noosa 23 Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72782 Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 11Feb 15, 2016 11:14 am I have the opposite problem to you guys. My zoysia is growing like mad since laying it down 4 months ago. Im cutting it back every weekend now, 200m2 worth. I dont bother watering it anymore, natural rain once every 2 weeks seem to keep it alive. Maybe you guys are over caring it? My annoyance is that this grass produce alot of seed flowers I think called stolons? So lawn only looks good for about a week then it looks furry with all the stolons growing through. Anybody know how to reduce the growth of stolons? Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 12Feb 15, 2016 12:21 pm Hmm, mine is growing like mad as well. Also mowing once a week. If I get a week or rain, then it can grow 10cm in the week. I used to get the stolons growing, generally around the beginning of spring. Haven't seen them at all over summer. Generally with weekly trimming I guess they don't have time to grow. I don't think you can stop them, unless you mow more often. During winter though, the grass just stops going upwards. I mow once every 1-2 months. My Noosa 23 Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72782 Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 13Feb 15, 2016 12:31 pm Can you tell me how old is your lawn? I think because mine is recent, it sprouts more stolons until it maybe a years time then it settles. Heres hoping anyway. Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Heres hoping anyway. Just under 1yr old. Planted late march in 2015. Around October it seeded for a few weeks. Hasn't done it again since. I have mowed it twice, and as luck would have it both times it was 40 degrees the next day, I think that has knocked it around. I may reduce watering a touch as it is growing really fast. Other than the issues above we have been really happy with the lawn, the feel, the colour etc. Hoping it will keep its colour over the winter months. I'm not keen on using the lawn beetle spray, just going to keep the seasol, molasses etc process going. Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 16Mar 11, 2016 10:25 pm My EZ grass, laid early Nov has same issues. I get a bit of die back in areas when we were having those consecutive 35 degree days, but bounces back in time. A few patchy areas too. I found it recovered quicker the less frequently I looked at it. Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 17Mar 29, 2016 2:00 pm How long should this lawn be? I am at the 4th longest setting on my Victa, started at the highest and am working backwards (lower) after a lawn contractor told me my lawn was way to long. It is maybe around 2-3 inches. He thinks I should gradually work my way to the lowest setting on my victa rotary mower? I think this will be too low? Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? I doubt you are doing anything but protect the grass by leaving it a bit higher as this grass doesn't thatch like kikuyu or buffalo does if you let it go. That is, assuming you are not watering regularly (only by natural rainfall) and in a warmer climate area. Hows the lawn looking now? I hear that over watering and fertilising can make the Zoysia actually go nuts with stolons. I'd be interested to know how the cutting height and cutting regime has worked out for you over nearly a year now.. Also, what area are most of you from? Information about this species suggest that it is a warm climate grass that is most suitable north of Sydney (best suited to Queensland). Thanks for all replies.
