Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 14, 2009 8:26 am Hi,
This is just matter of interest question to satisfy my curiosity. I'm just wondering of out of all the people that are/have built and/or renovated houses on the forum, has anyone had any female tradies work on their homes? I guess building is very much a male dominated industry and I'm interested to know if there's been any inroads by the ladies. So has anyone had a female tradie work on their home? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 4Jan 14, 2009 8:47 am Here in WA there is a business called "weeding women" I've used them before now. But encountering female tradies is rare. I've never seen one in the years we've needed trades people. Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 5Jan 14, 2009 8:54 am Yep, husband and wife plumbing team. And my nephew's 20 year old girlfriend is concreter. Couldn't believe it when he first told me as she is very slight of build and very good looking. It was just hard to imagine her doing concreting. Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 6Jan 14, 2009 8:54 am I've seen a few. There were 2 gals doing the prep for painting in the new office of the outfit I was working for, quite a few years back. Recently I spotted a bird working on the building site, can't remember what she was doing though.

The course had been runnng for a few years but they were the first girls to do it and none have done it in the 4 years since then. So doesn't look like girls are making much headway into entering this traditionally male area Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 8Jan 14, 2009 9:12 am Us...we had husband and wife spraypavers.

Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 10Jan 14, 2009 9:19 am Equal opportunity notwithstanding, sometimes I'm not sure why women should be equally represented in some vocations. Like do we need to have female mechanics? If a woman wants to be a mechanic (this is just an example), then she should have every opportunity to do so and not experience any sexual discrimination, but the mechanics' industry should not be berated for not having enough women in it. (For example.)
There's also the even more murky question about what constitutes sexual discrimination or harrassment. Like the quintessential girly calendar on the wall of the office. If a woman starts working at that particular workplace, should the calendar be taken down? If it should be taken down when a woman happens to begin working there, why is it okay to have it left up when there isn't a woman working there? The only way to approach consistency is to treat the girly calendar as offensive even if there isn't a woman (or someone else with different sensibilities to the stereotypical male tradie) present to be offended by it. But what does that say about free speech and the right to self-expression? I understand and support women's drive for equitable treatment in all situations. What I don't understand is why some lobby groups appear to be determined to have equal representation (e.g. equal numbers of female politicians to male politicians) in all things when there are fewer women in a particular field to choose from. If equal representation is truly the goal, shouldn't all the motivation be directed towards young women to drive them to take up a trade or profession, not the field in question? And shouldn't those same lobby groups be satisfied if the female population says "no thanks, I'm not interested"? Anyway, having said all that, we've had a husband & wife paving team, and I've seen a few female sparkies working at Melbourne Central when they were renovating it, but otherwise no. --Mike Everything I know, I learned from SBS. If women were more represented in some of these trades it might be interesting to see if and how the industry standards might change a little...
Standing out the front of my house with my son is like being down on the docks, DS is picking up a whole new vocabulary being surrounded by so many tradies Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 12Jan 14, 2009 9:38 am Cynarion, can count on you to liven the discussion!
I'm certainly not suggesting there has to be or should be equal representation in the building industry. But there are a certain number of woman and girls that are/have been interesting and I'm just interested to see if any are coming through. If they aren't, the next logical question is "Why not?" I know someone that got a job at a major builder with a phone call. No check of references, no check of qualifications. They just gave him the site address to go to and start work. I'm almost tempted to ring the same company for the same work as an experiment and see how far a simple phone call gets me. I bet my a** they don't just give me a site address and say away you go. As for the girly calender...... my view on such things... (actually on most things).... is if they are not offending anyone... they are not offensive. Once they do offend someone, they are. If that makes sense. (Obviously I'm talking about things that are not illegal... different issue.) And I'm sure that working on building sites would be a tough gig for a female. And there'd be a small percentage of male workers/bosses that made it as tough as possible. Same as horse racing (my background) and mining (where a friend is making her way). The implication being? There is no excuse for sloppy workmanship...or should that be workpersonship...I don't see why being male or female should make any difference to the work quality. That's driven by training, pride in your work, chasing the dollar, taking on too much work, and the attitude of GAF the tends to prevail. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 14Jan 14, 2009 9:43 am to_do_list Sharee If women were more represented in some of these trades it might be interesting to see if and how the industry standards might change a little... From reading all of Sharee's post, I think she was talking about the level of behaviour and language... not the level of workpersonship. I'd hazard a guess that the average building site would be less strewn with junk food wrappers if it was women working there. Not that we don't love junk food... but we tend to be able to find the bin. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 15Jan 14, 2009 10:02 am We had a male/female team of painters. Some days there was a second woman with them too, doing a lot of sanding, prep work and detail stuff like skirtings and architraves.
Other than that, it was all very blokey.... Quote: ...I think she was talking about the level of behaviour and language... not the level of workpersonship. The language thing gets me riled. (Not that I never swear, but I pick my time, place and company....) I get annoyed by tradies who seem to think a chain link fence is equivalent to a cone of silence. There's no consideration for pedestrians passing by, next door neighbours (including small children, the elderly etc). They just don't moderate their language AT ALL. Makes me want to go over and let them know that f*** is not a punctuation mark. And then smack them across the ear and ask if they kiss their mother with that mouth. Hey, I'm almost old enough to get away with it.... Back to the subject.... some years back, a place I worked had some tradies in to do some carpentry/handyman stuff. The "guys" arrived and turned out to be father and daughter. The daughter was around 155cm tall and a size 8, tiny little thing - and I went to primary school with her. I remember she never was conventional. I hate women being pigeonholed. Maybe that's why I took up bodybuilding. Of course, there is an upper limit on the number of times it can be used in a sentence before a clip across the ear is forthcoming. Re: Has anyone had any female tradies? 18Jan 14, 2009 10:18 am I absolutely hate tradespeople who use foul language at the drop of a pin. And to be honest, I notice that my FH swears 100% more at the warehouse with the "boys" then when he's at home. Granted, he would never ever swear infront of children, elderly etc (thank goodness) But I personally hate excessive swearing (and excessive to me is any swearing thats not used in a fit of rage )
As for female tradies, there's one place near our factory that has a female panel beater. I help FH out as much as I can when he's busy (which involves moving boards from the jaws of machines and stacking them) but thats as far as it gets typically.
