Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 30, 2015 1:25 pm Hello, I finished building my two storey house, but as expected regrets started for not doing things during build. I want to add wiring downstairs in the living areas to add down-lights, is this at all feasible as there is no roof to walk into? any experiences? My intention is to split a single light point wire to 5 down lights (LED won't pose any high load) Many thanks Re: Adding light points downstairs after build 2Oct 30, 2015 3:53 pm If you're really keen, it can always be done by removing some ceiling lining, and re-plastering it. Depending on the floor structure though, you might find someone who can pull the cables through without damaging the ceiling too much. This would be easiest if the floor joists are a truss construction and if there's no insulation in there. If you have photos of the ceiling before the lining went on, that may help someone plan out if it might be practical. Re: Adding light points downstairs after build 3Oct 30, 2015 7:26 pm I thought it is not possible to add downlights for downstairs if there is a concrete slab above you. That is why in my current build, I have to add in the LED lights slab cannisters before they pour the slab. Those slab cannisters are also quite deep. http://www.apemanufacturing.com.au/down ... nister.pdf Maybe if you have enough ceiling "gap" to do it, you can but if it is something like a skim coat then you can't? Re: Adding light points downstairs after build 4Nov 01, 2015 5:59 am No need to cut any ceiling panels out. I take it the additional lights will be in close proximity?in any case a good electrician can chase cable through the cavity but it is difficult. Oh I'm assuming that the joists aren't solid if so then it will be quite difficult. Re: Adding light points downstairs after build 5Nov 01, 2015 6:21 am Thanks for your responses. Luckily i found a photo showing part of the ceiling before plastering: https://flic.kr/p/zu9KmV I tried a stud finder around the existing single light point and couldn't find any for a distance of 1 meter in all direction. And also the plaster board seems to be flexing upwards. So I'm hoping there is some gap between plaster and parts of the joists. Is it normal to have gaps between plaster and ceiling joists? Thanks Re: Adding light points downstairs after build 6Nov 01, 2015 10:24 am Might be a bit difficult with those joists. If they batten the ceiling then there will be a 10mm gap between the ceiling and joist. Nothing to worry about though. It will be tricky to chase cable through there Re: Adding light points downstairs after build 7Nov 02, 2015 2:17 pm Thanks ! An electrician came to inspect, and luckily I have ducted AC vents, so he was able to pull one down and have a look. No gap between plaster board and joists, so will require drill extension to drill through the ones in the way, but not too bad as no plasterboard needs to be cut. Thanks for your all your help !
