Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 12, 2015 8:44 pm I have all my appliances organised except the rangehood. What's people's opinions on rangehoods under $1000 or just over for a 900mm cooktop???. I currently have a Westinghouse and it's so noisy but having said that it wasn't connected properly when the kitchen was done. It doesn't even have suction so I'm thinking it may be the reason for the noise and obviously it doesn't work as it should. The salesman where I'm buying the rest of my appliances suggested a Robinhood but I don't know anyone who has one. Any experiences with rangehoods would be helpful, price, noise, how effective it is etc, thanks so much Loving our new home, Upper Hunter NSW on 2.5 acres Re: Best Rangehood under $1000 2Oct 14, 2015 7:15 pm Just remember, you really do get what you pay for. Best Rangehood under $1000 4Oct 20, 2015 8:04 am What type are you after? We've gone for an ILVE (70cm undermount). Our house is not complete but I am told they are quiet. I was also told as you said the Westinghouse sounds like a plane taking off. Some were quieter than others, but typically the ones that were quieter also had a lower flow rate. Some of the noisier ones, when you switched them back a speed, sounded more like others, and seemed to have a similar flow rate as well. Some also sound "better" than others too, even if not specifically quieter, may have less intrusive sound pitch. But this qualitative appeal wasn't consistent to me over models. So one brand may have sounded better in the canopy model, but in the undermounts, a different brand may sound better, or quieter. I generally found that undermount models were quieter for a given flow rate. However, they may also need a higher flow rate to make up for not overhanging over the whole cooktop. My overall conclusion was that for both a high flow rate an quiet operation, you need to look at the models with roof-mounted motor, but that's out of your budget. Re: Best Rangehood under $1000 6Oct 21, 2015 7:13 am A very considered response. Our rationale was that the flow rate is not as critical for typical home cooking as the importance of using it every single time you cook, even if it's just boiling water. Our current home has a huge and very noisy SMEG that no doubt had a great flow rate but no one ever uses it because it's way too noisy. So provided it's enough to be effective but quiet enough to be used every time the stove is on that should be enough. I don't know I'm aware some people are really into ranges though! I totally agree, you get what you pay for, it's with everything really. I wish I could afford a Siemens, Qasair or Whispair as they were my first choices but the kitchen is over budget already so I need to be sensible. I would prefer an undermount to cover my 900mm cooktop, any suggestions of brands would be very useful. It is under $1000and supposed to be good enough and very quiet. Meets your budget. We got ours for around $580 with the rest of our appliances. http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/ilve ... od-cu7970/ SMEG have an undermount too that would work, I think it's 900. Interestingly if you read and take stock in choice reviews on cooking appliances, mid price items can often outperform the most expensive. Exception is cooktops, where Miele tops it (not ovens, though). They don't have a good review for concealed ranges though. Yes I'd love a more $$$ brand but can't afford it, so getting advice for rangehoods under or around the $1000 is exactly what I need. I will definitely check out the Ilve and Smeg ones you suggested Loving our new home, Upper Hunter NSW on 2.5 acres Best Rangehood under $1000 13Oct 31, 2015 9:41 am Danette Thank so much Leksie5000, I really appreciate your response. I will definitely check out the Ilve and Smeg ones you suggested Yeah the budget has to fold somewhere. We have two ovens but I spoke to someone who is a chef and used to sell appliances.. He said for home cooking you just want something that will be used ALL the time. The extraction rates are a bit of a gimmick because you won't necessarily produce what needs to be extracted at that flow, unless you are smoking food every day. No point having a range with an extraction rate similar to a commercial kitchen requirement that is so noisy you never use it. Choice also stated the below in their review " Usually quoted in cubic metres per hour. CHOICE has been testing rangehoods for some time and we've found that the claimed extraction rate makes little difference to the performance. This is because the internal design and the installation of the rangehood matters a lot more. For example, if the rangehood duct is obstructed, all the extraction power in the world isn't going to help. It may help a salesperson to sell the rangehood if they can rattle off a large number, but when you get it home and have it installed you'll want it to work effectively, not inefficiently. Have a look at our reviews to make an informed choice." Shop around too. We got prices from Appliances Online then took them to various places getting them to beat each other down a bit. In this way we brought our original quote for ovens, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, range and cooktop down by over $2,000 for the same stuff. I've heard very good reports on the Iilve though. Thing is, what's the point of having a boatload of sucking power if it's too noisy to use every day? What prevents damage is consistent use - even if you just boil an egg. Yes some have huge capacity and are more quiet but whether it's necessary for a residential kitchen is up to the individual..
