Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 26, 2015 7:27 pm Well, after a long wait we have finally started building our new home and I thought I would start to document our progress here. Being a battle-axe block in an established area it has fairly limited access and I decided to design the house myself to maximise use of the space (678sqm) and to make sure we get exactly what we need in a floor-plan. We worked with a friend who is a draftsman to come up with our final plans and we're really happy. Now I can't wait to see it all take shape! We had quite a bit of earth-moving and retaining to do first but foundations have just gone down with a slab still to come. Now the race is on to see if we can get in before Christmas (probably not but we can dream right?)!

I really like how you've done the stairs so they're not too intrusive. Are you putting a window over them or over your entry so there's light in the stairwell? I'll post the site plan too. I think we've made good use of the space with the house pushed to the front/right as much as possible leaving a good backyard for the kids - something that is tricky to get in outer city suburbs these days! Another big priority was having the kitchen/living/dining areas situated so that I could be doing my thing inside while still being able to watch the little ones in the backyard and it also makes for easy entertaining too. Fingers crossed it all turns out the way I hope! The stairwell was a bit tricky in terms of putting a window in because of where the WIR is. We ended up with a window on the southern side (garage side) over the stairwell. It's nice and big, 1500 x 2100 from memory, so hopefully it will be enough - fingers crossed! Re: Our new home in Brisbane's north 7Jul 28, 2015 10:09 am Ah yes I see it there now. We decided not to go two storey for our first place but we haven't ruled it out for next time...But one of the things we both agreed on was that we wanted to position the stairwell in a place it could have a window I'm with you on hallways, we tried to keep them to a minimum too. We only have our entrance hall which is fairly unavoidable (and better than walking straight in to a living area anyway I think). You used the same certifiers as Clarendon Homes lo. Considering the design is aimed at using the space I would have thought a massive void would have been better used as floor space. Not a fan of the stairs turning in different directions and I guess the void will be a better option for getting your furniture up and down. The master bedroom also seems compromised having 3 walls with doors. Means there is limited options for location of bed. Just my opinion and as I've said many times.. if we all liked the same things we would be a pretty boring lot lol. Look forward to watching your home progress. Re: Our new home in Brisbane's north 20Aug 01, 2015 10:15 am Thanks for the feedback Roomeat. I know what you mean re the void, we've had a few people say the same but I honestly don't know what else I'd want upstairs. We have good-sized bedrooms and lots of storage, decent bathroom, everything we need really. We had a lot more to fit into the ground level so we started there and the top sort of just had to fall into line. So I guess the void was a bit of an accident but now I love the fact that it will be there. The logical option might have been study upstairs, that would have made much better use of space, but I deliberately wanted it where it is so as the kids get older I can keep an eye on homework, Internet activities, etc. We have a big cut-out with shutters to go in post-build. Totally get what you're saying re main bedroom too. Unfortunately bed will have to be up against the wall with the shower behind it. It's a bit of a pain but one we can handle. Just couldn't seem to configure things any other way without compromising on something else of higher priority. The fun of coming up with the perfect plan hey?
