I've got my selections interviews all booked in and final interview for a few weeks' time... Still need to book in a colour consultation though, so we'll see what they say. I have a colleague who is building and using basalt roof, so I might pop over and have a look at his. Something else that I have to decide on is whether I want an underbench microwave or should I simply put it in the pantry, unfortunately I don't have enough overhead cupboard space which would have been ideal (except above the fridge, but I reckon that would be too high and impractical). I think underbench might be a bit low, and if it was in the pantry I get more room to fit pot drawers in the kitchen! We decided to put our Microwave in the Pantry, hides it away aswell First Home - Fairmont Homes - Vogue - Seaford Heights Vista - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78691 Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 11Aug 03, 2015 1:31 pm Damien_Lanni We decided to put our Microwave in the Pantry, hides it away aswell Yeah, it's not a bad idea to have it in the pantry, however I will probably use it a lot, so I reckon now that an underbench might be more practical and easier to get to. I also had a another look in the display home yesterday and I think there will still be enough room for a set of pot drawers as well, so it works out well. Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 12Aug 03, 2015 2:22 pm Regarding your colours, you can check the solar absorptance from Bluescope: http://www.steel.com.au/products/coated ... sification There's not so great a difference between Monument at 74%, and Basalt at 69%, so I wouldn't stress so much between those two on account of heat gain if you have a strong visual preference. Most of the popular colours aren't too different either. Once you start getting to the lighter colours, you have to work harder to get it looking good with the bricks and other colours. We ended up at surfmist. Looking at the plan, I don't think that pantry would be so convenient to have a microwave in it, so underbench may be your best bet. Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 13Aug 03, 2015 4:29 pm Oh wow, thanks John, that's a very handy link. I thought the Basalt was lighter, but can see how the absorbance is so high after seeing it on my colleague's build over the weekend. I really like your colours, maybe an Almond brick + surfmist roof + paperbark gutters and roller door might work well for me... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I like the darker colours, but would definitely prefer the lower cooling cost in the end. Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 14Aug 03, 2015 9:58 pm Heat load was a significant factor in us going to Surfmist, but having looked at the calculations, it doesn't need to be a deal-breaker for a darker roof. With a dark roof through, you'd really want to have roof level insulation like Bradford Anticon, which the builders likely charge an extra $2-3k for. But then, we're still getting that with a light roof. Though it can't be good for a ducted A/C system to have to handle that much heat, and you'd want good insulation on the A/C ducts as well.
On the downsides for the white roof is that the discolouring over time can be quite noticeable, so it's good to take that into account. That surfmist colour scheme is similar to what we are planning. I know the almond brick well, as it's on our current house, and quite similar in colour to the one we're using on the new house. Paperbark goes well with Austral Almond. One thing to watch though is that paperbark and surfmist aren't all that happy together. Surfmist tries to go to the more grey colours, and grey doesn't live so well with the cream of paperbark. I've worked a bit at the 3D modelling to get them live together. This is what I've arrived at: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Surfmist roof and gutters. Paperbark facia and downpipes, with white window frames and surfmist garage door. I've used a fair bit of white in the wall trim and details to connect it in with the roof. I'd be reluctant to put paperbark for the gutter or garage door though, and I wasn't so happy with the more uniform brick colour like the Almond. Given your initial choice, I'd consider looking at the Nougat or Grange brick with the light roof. Something like this: Roof and Gutter: Surfmist Facia: Evening Haze or Dune Brick: Austral Nougat with off-white mortar I'd still be leaning towards white for the windows, but I think with that combination you could choose a colour matching in more with the bricks for the garage door, which from memory Nougat was close to Evening Haze or Dune - both of which go well with surfmist. That's not to dissuade you from the cream direction we're taking, but as an alternative that may fit in easier with current styles. Also, as you go to darker bricks, you can also support light roof colours with some contrast - so a chocolate brick with white mortar and a Dune through surfmist roof, is fairly common - though that scheme helps to have some white render as a feature. A light roof can also work with red brick, but that's another look. Also, in terms of light roofs, this picture from bailey76 is worth a look: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ From - viewtopic.php?p=912239#p912239 That has an evening haze roof and gutters, and looks like surfmist facia. That seems to work well with that brick and the off-white mortar. Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 15Aug 04, 2015 9:53 am Thanks John. Here are a couple of options I'm now thinking about: I'm leaning towards the second as I feel like the Surfmist is too light for my liking. It's ok in my pictures, but in real life (and in your pictures) it's much lighter. Brick: Austral Grange Roof & Doors: Surfmist Gutters: Dune Windows: Grey Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Brick: Austral Grange Roof: Shale Grey Gutters & Doors: Dune Windows: Grey Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 16Aug 04, 2015 9:56 pm Don't force yourself into colours you don't like, so make sure you find something you're happy with. I'd be careful putting shale grey and dune together. They are quite similar, but different enough to clash. The grange brick is warm in tonings, so I'd just go with the dune roof with it. I'm thinking maybe this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Roof, gutters, rendered posts: Dune Bricks: grange with off-white mortar(brighton lite cement + white sand) facia, garage, gable infill: Gully windows: woodland grey Here's the same thing with shale grey roof Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Roof, gutters: shale grey Bricks: grange garage, facia, rendered posts: dune windows: wallaby Otherwise, going to a surfmist roof, and the nougat bricks Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ roof, gutters: surfmist bricks: nougat facia, garage, rendered posts: dune windows: wallaby Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 17Aug 04, 2015 10:12 pm I think Grange bricks look really good with jasper and surfmist Could go grange bricks, surfmist roof, jasper gutter fascia and roller door (or surfmist or timber) and timber door? Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 18Aug 04, 2015 10:13 pm Re: First Build - Fairmont Homes SA - Lincoln Mod 20Aug 04, 2015 10:26 pm And by bluesteel request, here's with surfmist and jasper: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The jasper and surfmist do go well with grange. I'm not such a fan of the heavy line of dark gutter+facia under a surfmist roof, but it does bring the jasper colour out. You could also do the jasper door like this, but tone the roof back to dune if you don't want it so light. While I have worked a bit at getting my render colours fairly accurate, bear in mind it's only my approximation too, and the real thing is different again - so you have to calibrate what you see off real examples. hi guys.
