Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 12, 2015 12:08 am Hi guys Posting after quite a long time. We have just recently started using our spare bedroom which is next to our ensuite WC attached to our master bed ( as per below pic ). Noticed that whenever we flush the toilet in the ensuite, it can be heard really loud in the spare bedroom. its even worse at night, enough to wake a light sleeper. Obviously, being an internal wall, there is no insulation. I am keen to do something about this and am thinking of the below options: 1) Tile the WC walls OR 2) fix a Gyprock Sounchek plasterboard over the existing plasterboard wall in WC. 3) Inserting insulation ( obviously, this will be an expensive option I believe ) Any ideas??? Thanks in advance for your help Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Ensuite Bedroom noise issue 2Jul 12, 2015 1:33 am Just thinking You might be able to get a different toilet or flushing system, someone else will be able to confirm something better tho? I know we had one in a rental and the plumber came to fix a leak on it and put in a new filler and it was so quiet when it was filling. Re: Ensuite Bedroom noise issue 3Jul 12, 2015 11:51 am The best place to mitigate noise is at the source, so as mentioned, first look at the toilet itself. For the flushing noise itself, you can look at having a seat/lid that is reasonably thick and seals up fairly well. For the cistern refilling noise, there are several things you can look at. Often the inlet valves include a flow quietening device in the line, and some will be quieter than others. Also you can look at adjusting the tap on the toilet itself to regulate the inflow rate. Generally closing it off more will make it quieter, but also last for longer to fill. Beyond that, you are looking at better sound insulating the wall. The ideas you mention are good, though I think that by the time you add extra plasterboard, it isn't much extra work to put the acoustic batts in the wall as well. Adding an extra sheet already means you have to mess with cornice and wall joins, so you pretty much might as well pull off the existing sheet and do the lot while, you're at it. I kind of think the same about the tiling. If you're going to resurface the wall, you might as well get it night underneath first. Re: Ensuite Bedroom noise issue 4Jul 12, 2015 10:53 pm Definitely check the source first. Often simply turning the inlet tap back a bit to slow the flow will quieten it down a lot. Closing the lid with a heavier lid might help too. Re: Ensuite Bedroom noise issue 5Jul 12, 2015 10:58 pm Thanks guys, will give it a go. The noise is sort of like you hear when you sitting next to the toilets on a plane . Needless to say, its both ways. i.e. we can hear everything clear when someone talking in the spare bedroom and we are in the toilet . I might try getting some quotes on insulating that part of the wall if i have understood your dimensions correctly my suggestions include using the smallest toilet and wall hung handbasin eg Caroma Urbane with in wall cistern, small wall… 1 6573 Nope, only on the inside, I've literally has my ears to the brick outside and can't hear anything. I can sort of 'reset' the noise by pressing firmly on the studs. This… 10 5024 Upgrading your windows to soundproof ones, like triple-glazed, can make a significant difference.
