You soon got pretty bored of being isolated from everyone!! Re: How big is your backyard? 15Dec 13, 2008 4:02 pm I am currently living in a townhouse with a 3m x 4m courtyard. When my build is complete, I will have a 15m x 15m backyard, not including my 7m x 4m alfresco. I am looking forward to my new backyard for my kid to run around, but definitely not looking forward mowing it.
I guess, one day, when I retire, I may consider having a bush behind my backyard.....hmmm...maybe not...I will probably be moving into an apartment instead Building Clarendon Brighton - Done and moved in Sept 2009 Re: How big is your backyard? 16Dec 13, 2008 8:56 pm We'll have about 13m x 15m when we're done, which is quite a decent yard for our area! Stevep79 & Principessa Finished building Wisdom Homes Impression 33mkII in The Ponds, Sydney http://lilypadintheponds.blogspot.com Re: How big is your backyard? 17Dec 13, 2008 9:05 pm We have about 15m from the back of the Al Fresco to the back fence, and the block is about 20m wide. We have a decent front yard, too. We are putting a pool in that has a lap pool along the side, then a big square bit, spa and swim out bit at the back.
Our problem with landscaping is that the (rotten ) Council even have a say in that!!!! We even have to get permission to take out dead trees . Our landscape plan (which they said was beautiful- their words -) was rejected, b/c it didn't comprise enough native, indigenous (aka "ugly weeds") plants ...... Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: How big is your backyard? 18Dec 13, 2008 9:31 pm hmm well I certainly haven't got 10 acres to my name but we are building on 3/4 of an acre.
From memory we have approximately 17 m from the roadside to the front of the house. Then the house and the house finishes about half way onto the block. Back: We do have a 10 m easement along the back of the block between us and a plum farm. The developer was to plant trees there as part of the OH & S requirements because of the plum farm. ( all those sprays they use) He told us he was going to plant weeping peppermint trees and that they had been ordered which we were delighted about. We are still waiting for this to happen. It's been 10 months since we purchased the land now. I'm trying to get council to chase the developer up about them since it was supposed to be a requirement for him to do it. The easement only lasts for 2 years though. We haven't really planned what we'll do out the back apart from considering a veggie garden somewhere and some chooks and some fruit trees. And possibly a huge shed in the far back corner one day. We have 2 varieties of grass tree in our back yard area and some gum trees and we intend to keep them so At least part of the back garden will be native plants to compliment these. I would like a pond at some stage. yes I'm one of "those" people who likes the sound of running water. I quite like the dry creekbed look that a few people are into at the moment. We have a huge problem with rock in the garden so we won't be doing much digging in the back yard at all. Laundry side: One side( (nwest) will have the clothes line and a quiet contemplative garden area eventually. With some sort of hedging plant between us and our future neighbours. This will be our only side that we will have neighbours on until the plum farm gets rezoning approval. ( will be 3+ yrs) Main road side: The other side which faces onto road will eventually have an extended patio and an above ground spa area. Close to our boundary on that side I plan to put in Grevillea "ned kellys" to make a native hedge. We are up from the road and these will be down at road level. Front: We plan to do a huge curved garden bed out the front with additional non native trees and put in a small lawn patch there as well. Plants to go in the garden bed include Dieties http://www.abulk.com.au/awn/Dieties.html Mum has been propagating these from plants in her garden. I've brought about 50 down to our rental already and she has over 100 still at her house of differing sizes.Rhoeo's ( thanks Mum again) roses.agapanthus , a Flowering plum. some other ornamental type deciduous trees to be decided still. There will be a garden bench somewhere. Possibly near the blank wall of our bedroom, All around: We will have retaining walls to build as the builders have raised the house pad a lot. Re: How big is your backyard? 19Dec 14, 2008 3:51 pm wakeboardandy we will have a 6x4m patch of lawn at our side... which I still think is too big!!! We will have a 5x3 alresco and that will mean we might actually use the backyard unlike our houses for the last 6 years.... andy even if you don't like your back yard I am pretty sure that little fella in your avatar will be thankful for it in a few years' time Re: How big is your backyard? 20Dec 14, 2008 4:07 pm petal Our problem with landscaping is that the (rotten ) Council even have a say in that!!!! I remember a guy in the UK was asked for a list of plants before he could get planning permission - so he looked at his block and listed all the latin names for the weeds that were growing there - dandelions, thistles etc... the council passed it...
