Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Re: DIY timber laminate 2Jun 13, 2015 8:37 am Its the sort of job I'd think twice about - unless I had the skills - which I don't. In saying that a mate did it and quite well. Are you a handy DiY sort of person ? Re: DIY timber laminate 4Jun 15, 2015 8:53 pm incredibly easy just go and purchase the following: Decent jigsaw with thin blade (for cutting around intricate parts like door jambs and kitchen cabinetry) Cheap small circular saw with a fine tooth blade (for cutting boards at ends or along a wall) Cheap plastic contour gauge (not normally used but i recommend it for a DIYer for getting intricate bits spot on) Slide hammer (for butting in the last board at a wall where a hammer can not be swung) Just make a plan on where to start, run the board length-ways if you can, it will make everything a lot easier, ensure your slab or subfloor has absolutely no lumps, and use a plastic foam moisture barrier underlay. Think carefully about each cut, its easy for a non professional to make cuts backwards or cut the wrong end of the board through double negative thinking. A big tip... Just make a start and attempt to not stop until you are finished, do not do little bits at a time as it makes the job exhausting. Have the 2 of you available if possible, it takes a quarter of the time if you have someone laying boards, and someone cutting. Just ensure good communication if the 2 of u are doing it. Re: DIY timber laminate 6Jun 22, 2015 1:05 pm Yep, easy as if you are handy. I removed the skirting before starting and think it made it easier, and the finish was better as there was no additional beading around the edges. Re: DIY timber laminate 7Jun 25, 2015 4:02 pm THIS ^^ very good suggestion and an important one, and is probably the only one key thing which can make a DIY job better than a professional job. Pros come in slap it down and bead it up unless requested and then charged accordingly. Homeowners can take their time and make use of existing skirting so long as its not too difficult to remove! Re: DIY timber laminate 8Nov 17, 2015 10:46 pm I'm going to do it. My husband is the handy one but he's busy with too many other jobs getting our house ready to sell. There are plenty of videos on Youtube that state it's easy. After watching, I'm confident I can do it and will get my husband to watch me getting started. Anyone got any suggestions for how I can finish off the hallway that drops down one step?? (Tiles below) Thank you. Re: DIY timber laminate 9Dec 01, 2015 7:29 pm Hello everyone! I have installed timber laminates myself, although it's quite easy.. but quite tiring actually and my whole body actually ache for a week after the install! In addition to the usual tools like jig saw etc.. I also recommend getting some knee pads, dust masks or back braces..etc.. good luck! Re: DIY timber laminate 10Dec 02, 2015 9:07 pm Great advice thanks Barny didn't think about back brace ... Great idea! Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 16212 Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4915 |
