Hairline cracks in brand new floorboards

Hi guys,

l have a quick question with regards to my floorboards - we have Premium Readyflor Blackbutt. l am a bit of a clean freak so am sometimes down on my hands and knees wiping things off the floorboards and l have noticed in certain areas where 2 floorboards join together, there are tiny hairline cracks. You can only just see them but you can definitely feel them when you run your finger across the boards. They are not part of the grain. l would say l have noticed this on around a quarter of the boards. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know if this is normal? Should l contact the company and ask for a warranty assessment?

yes it has also happened to us in a few spots. Are your boards direct stick?

Hi DeeElle,

They are the Uniclic system so no glue has been used. l had the Premium rep come out who was a really straight shooting type of guy and he said timber is a natural product and this is a normal occurance of the settling process. The worst of it occurs within the firs 1-2 months and we have been here for over 3mths now so l am hoping that's the worst of it. He took pictures and said if it gets any worse to contact him again. Interestingly he said their standard is if you can't see any damage/ scratching etc when you are standing then that is within tolerance. You definitely can't see our cracks when you are standing.

It can depend on what time of the year they were laid and if they were acclimatised in the room properly.
The air is drier in winter so is a good time to lay timber flooring.

Do you have to acclimatise the timber in the house? One floor guy told me that they do it in their warehouse and since the warehouse is close to our house, the humidity is the same. I'm not sure if I should believe him

timber is a porous product that aborbs moisture and shrinks with the climate. So enjoy the gaps and the non gaps as it changes throughout the year.
