Re: Is there any benefits in muliple zoning in ducted air-co 10Feb 24, 2015 8:43 pm Yes you will save electricity by isolating zones and closing the door. The condenser and the fan coil will be doing less work therefore consuming less energy. It's very basic engineering 101. You are conditioning a lower volume of air, with less energy loss through windows etc. It will cost more for the zone motors and controls, but if you use your air conditioning regularly, the cost would be paid back eventually. Without knowing the full design details or how much you will use it, it's difficult to say how long the payback period would be. As a "back of the beer coaster" approximation, if those two bedrooms make up 10% of the overall conditioned space of your house, you'd use roughly 10% less energy if you isolated them. Re: Is there any benefits in muliple zoning in ducted air-co 11Feb 25, 2015 2:13 pm Technically tru but not always so in practice. I have the same size home and largest single phase system and on days it needs to be used (35 plus)its on flat chat at 18 d3grees just to keep house at a 25. Zone motors are a negligable running cost as they just push the air to the desired location. These are pwered by a few watts. The cooling unit in the range of 12-15 kw has upwards of 3-4kw/h running costs per hour. Check your tech specs and check your electricity prices for a good view of what you will be paying. More relevant is where your return air and thermo stat sit. I have some rooms that get significantly cooler than where the thermostat is so the system will keep cooling. Next build will have 3 phase power and a larger system with more efficient inverter. Creator of superduperonium, expert at expert things, nobel laureate, can hold my breath for 10 minutes. Re: Is there any benefits in muliple zoning in ducted air-co 13Feb 25, 2015 2:30 pm Our 17kw actron regularly runs 3 of 4 zones in a 38square house, does keep temp on days around 35 at 22 degrees , worst it gets is 24 if turned on really late and its really hot. Re: Is there any benefits in muliple zoning in ducted air-co 14Feb 25, 2015 4:59 pm Yes, if your system is incorrectly designed (ie undersized), then it will be spinning it's ringer off in hot conditions regardless of whether or not one or two zones are isolated. But a correctly engineered system will perform as I described. Personally, I'd be going with higher efficiency rather than higher input power. Geothermal heat pump compressor with an Actron fan coil unit would be my choice. More than 2 times more efficient than regular inverter air to air condenser unit. Requires some drilling into the ground for the heat rejection loops though so is a bit more expensive than traditional AC Re: Is there any benefits in muliple zoning in ducted air-co 15Feb 25, 2015 6:33 pm My system is actron. Largest size for single phase. The op has same size home. Unless he gets 3ohase and a more efficient unit, my comments are as accuate. Extra zones will be for comfort mostly.
