Are you having balustrade on both sides or just on the one side? For a wider staircase would it be a good idea to have a handrail in addition to the balustrade? We only require balustrade down the middle of the stairs as either side is enclosed with plasterboard. We have gone for a verticle timber balustrade similar to the pic below. I belive we will have a handrail installed along the plasterboard wall too. Maybe the majority of the world isn't as much of a trip-hazard as I am, but particularly when I can't see my feet (eg. carrying somehting) the right-angles somehow mean I know where they are the whole time.
