Cost for cabinet maker to build shelves to a blank wall

Ikea has Billy bookshelves that are $79 for an 800mm one. You could always get six and have one cut down.

They also have a 400 one.

The are 202cm tall but you can get an extension bit to bring it up to 237.

I think if you're going to be putting books on all the shlves (as opoosed to light knick-knacks) then you'll want to be sure to do it right. Books are damn heavy and you sure don't want your shelves collapsing.

I wanted two walls done for my place a couple of years and got quoted about $10,500 (almost 15mx 2m worth of wall ).

I ended up purchasing 8 plain freestanding bookshelves instead for $150 each, colour matched the stain of the architrave's wood and got a handyman to attach them to the wall and do a bit of edging.

All up it cost me $1,600 and it looks custombuilt.

It won't work for everyone but its something to consider.

Good idea Ozkarnak. I might look into that also. I cant believe custom shelving could cost that much!

That doesnt sound like a bad price. I will have to have a look around ikea again. Last time I looked, their normal size bookcases cost something lik $200+ each!

What Rachelle's posted is the corner configuration of the Billy units so that you can see the full range...so that's from L-R....a 400 mm wide + 800 mm wide + corner unit + 800 mm wide + 400 mm wide...all the units are separable so you can have them side by side....viz a vis

Actually when you think about it you can buy a pine or Melamine bookshelf for about $200 already made up, but walk into bunnings and you can't get the materials for that and thats before you get out a drill.

Someone must be getting ripped off somewhere

They attach to the wall, they come with security thingymebobs that you attach, but they're not hanging, they have the plinth.

Talk to Mike about the customising!

Sorry $89 for the 800mm, $79 for 400mm.

Be careful of IKEA's laminate shelving. Some of the stuff is c!@p. They should last a few years if you don't move the books around too much ie removing & returning books.

We put an ikea kitchen in here and it's crap, for sure.

And son's Malm bed isn't great, can tell that the laminate will peel soon, but our Billy bookshelves that we bought second hand have no problems (except for all the crayon 'art' all over them lol)

We've had our first set of bookcases for 12 years, second set for 8 years, have been relocated twice and moved around the house a lot and they are as good as the day we bought them. Like with all flat pack stuff, you need to retighten the cam locks every couple of years and they should be OK.

I have had both good and bad experiences with Ikea. That is why I'm very careful about what I buy from there. They have some things which are really good value for money, while other stuff is just down right cheap and nasty, but not that cheap in price!!

I once had 10 (or was it 12 ?) Billy bookcases from Ikea. They were pretty good for a few years. I moved a few times and each time they suffered. Then the laminate started to peel. And they all didn't want to sit aligned or straight. But for the price I was reasonably happy. I got about 10 years good use out of them.

Funnily enough, the thing I disliked the most was the way dust and potentially bugs could collect behind the bookcases.
