We only use the best quality suppliers and don't have bows or weak spots in our tile....I'm like yeah right. Wait till they lay them and I find a bowed tile when I get the straight edge out! I'm using 300x600 semi polished rectified and vitrified tiles. Fact is they don't make much if any profit on the tiling if you supply the tiles! Normally they charge 2-3 times what they pay for the tiles! Agreed. A very stupid statement! Problem is you have an allowance of 35/m2. You see the price at $35m2 but the building company is probably buying it for around half that! They make good mark ups on materials! My wife and I went through this a couple of years ago when we built our house with a large volume builder. We were very lucky though he allowed me to take over at lock up and do all the internals myself. If I had used the builder to install what I have in the kitchen, bathrooms, wardrobes and laundry it would have cost us $100,000 more!!! I just never realised that there could be such a difference in the same size tile. Interestingly the tile with the interesting size is the most expensive at $65p/m. I'd never expected that with a tile of that price. All the various plain white tiles we've seen are around $20-30 and they have all been the expected size. If we had just the dark tiles on the floor and plain white on the walls I would probably offset them. I've realised I've obviously got an OCD and it would be a major bug bearer. But the fact that we were going to have the floor tile run up the side of one wall to the ceiling, makes me think that offsetting would look really odd. As they have to be offset horizontally and vertically. I've had a trawl through photos online and I can't find any which have offset tiles on wall and floor they are all perfectly aligned. OCD - Offset Ceramic Dilemma ? I must be OCD too. I wanted all straight grout lines. Not achievable. The tile company didn't tell me they were ordering different sized tiles so I ended up with offset tiling when I asked them to match the floor tile to a generic white tile for walls in the bath and ensuite. What I should have done was to get them to lay them out on the benchtop and line them up to see if there is any discrepancy in the sizes. Sadly it is buyer beware. I did supply the feature tile but then they slugged me for laying them, should have tried to arrange this after handover. But then I was told that they wouldn't have allowed this as the job would have been "unfinished". No win situation. Hey everyone Not for me or anyone I know, just generally interested.
