Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 09, 2014 9:27 am We are in the process of building our house... the builder said we can put our own noggings in to support stuff we want to attach to the wall later. Out house will have the Supaloc steel frame system My question is, what are noggings? I know the general idea (some wood in the wall)... but what do I need to do to install them? And what type of wood should I use? Any pointers would be great. Re: What are noggings and how to install them? 2Jun 09, 2014 12:50 pm If you want to hang dryers or tv's at a later date. Steel frames are not just a matter of nailing 2 bits of timber together. Ask your builder what timber you should use, and if you go and get it and a carton of beer would he put them in for you. Re: What are noggings and how to install them? 3Jun 10, 2014 1:27 pm We have been told by our builder that they will install the noggins free of charge. We just need to speak with the site supervisor. Is it worth asking your builder StGeorgeBuild? So, as others have said, people often add extra noggins prior to the plaster going on so they can drill directly into them and support heavier items on the walls (think television mounting brackets, dryers, floating shelves that might carry a bit of weight etc). So in a timber framed house it is simply a matter of getting another bit of whatever the frams is made of and basically butting it up against a pre-existing noggin to strengthen the wall. As to how you would add timber noggins to a steel framed house; I have no idea! Probably best to ask your builder as mgilla says. Re: What are noggings and how to install them? 5Jun 11, 2014 10:59 am Typically timber noggins (either 90x35 timber or in commercial construction off cuts of formply are used). The timber noggins are fixed horizontally (with the longer 90mm side vertical) between steel studs using tek screws drilled though the steel studs into the timber noggin. The face of these noggins need to be flush with the face of the studs on the side of the wall you will be fixing to. If 90x35 timber noggins are used, 2 off should be installed (one directly above the other) to provide some tolerance when later fixing brackets etc to them. It is a good idea to mark up a plan showing where they are and their heights. The plumber will be installing noggins for the toilet cistern and any wall hung vanities. Have a look at what he has done. Re: What are noggings and how to install them? 6Jun 11, 2014 9:18 pm I have always worked out with my clients where they need to hang things and need extra support in the framing. To ask a plumber,to fit a noggin so it ends up flush with any lining is a bit like asking a slaughterman to fillet a fish. Re: What are noggings and how to install them? 7Oct 13, 2015 10:53 am What if noggins are not tight and if there’s a bit of crack? There’s crack because my builder inserted pieces of wood to fill in the gap between the noggins and studs. Then nails it, causing it to crack a little. Re: What are noggings and how to install them? 8Oct 13, 2015 7:54 pm Definitely put some in where you will be hanging things, which is everywhere! Im re gyp-rocking our whole house and adding them while i go, its very handy. Really beefed up the wall before hanging the TV off it. That's a fantastic result! Happy you got it sorted out. cheers Simeon 6 8640 I haven’t. But have a Lowe Design home. Not only did I find Matt Lowe patronising and a bully, but the home is NOT TO CODE.
