Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 10, 2014 10:23 pm Hi All, We are almost at the end of our home being built. They expect the home to be ready for us by Early June. Right in Winter. Which makes laying any instant or seed grass almost impossible i have heard (please correct me if i am wrong) Looking at the option of having a decent quality of fake turf installed in the rear yard, BUT i have a med-large dog that loves scratching his paws and pushing his paws down into the turf after he, well, poops to put it nicely. I have seen loads of videos on how it is installed and noticed that they put in like a peg into the turf to hold it down. Has anyone had this done? and has anyone had issues with their dogs paws catching thos pegs and hurting themselves at all? I know if they need to do a join, and the dogs paws catches the join it will lift it if they don't put enough pegs in but i will see if i can design the garden so i wont have a join to minimise this risk. Any suggestions would be helpful.. Even if people have successfully layed instant turf and its works when it was layed in winter? Mel Re: Fake Turf and Dogs 2May 11, 2014 1:56 am My friend had some landscaping done recently and also wanted fake turf for her dogs, but the landscaper talked her out of it as apparently the wee makes it smell. She suggested a fine loose limestone gravel instead, which she went with, looks great. Re: Fake Turf and Dogs 3May 11, 2014 9:33 am We have it - but dog is not a digger. He loves rolling on it and occasionally pees on it - we get no smell. One of the better decisions we've made on the new house ... Re: Fake Turf and Dogs 4May 13, 2014 10:50 pm Thanks trixee and saint mike for your information. looks like i will end up doing the fake turf.. less maintenance and now i can get the one best suited for dogs its better. Re: Fake Turf and Dogs 5May 19, 2014 11:07 am I have heard that fake lawn will be very hot in summer and it can burn your dog paws. I am looking into all options as well at the moment as I have a dog too which is only a puppy at the moment but will be a big dog pretty soon (bernese mountain dog). Our house will be finished at the end of August/early September and it will be a good time to install the real lawn but I am not sure how it will hold the large dog running over it. Ewwww. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Fake Turf and Dogs 7May 27, 2014 11:11 am It is warm - but if you get the better quality - ie longer "stalks" - then it is ok. Ours is never too hot to walk on. Re: Fake Turf and Dogs 8May 27, 2014 11:42 am From a dog training point of view - for your older dog just be aware that dogs are very tactile so may not want to do 'business' on something that feels different especially if they are used to going on a certain type of substance. Which will make it easier for cleaning up your own yard but make sure you take baggies when you go for a walk!! They using concrete or timber sleepers? Timber or steel uprights? Any drainage behind sleeper? 3 5986 I recently went through a similar renovation and move scenario when updating our family home.
