Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Acrylic render issues 7Mar 01, 2014 9:37 am Dexter Hi all, need some advice, the acrylic render work on my double storey has finished and the render is full of streaks and the render colour is not uniform. The acrylic render gives the house an old look due to this. Can anyone advise options? I was thinking we could paint over it? I've also heard of acrashield that can be top-coated over acratex... what's the difference with normal paint? Anyone have any experience on this. Thank you in advance If the newly finished job has streaks and is visually unacceptable why don't you get the contractor to refinish it at his expense? Only the feature walls are dark and they came our ok. So do you know does acrashield provide a more consistent colour? Since the colour is so light I'm seriously considering painting over it with colourbond surfmist. As Building Expert says, get them to re-do it. There's no way the light coloured render should be streaky unless it's been done wrong. Acrylic render is essentially acrylic paint with textured aggregate mixed into it. Acrashield is a paint-on finishing coat so should give you a very even finish......if applied properly. Personally, I'd be hassling the builder to get it rectified. Re: Acrylic render issues 9Mar 02, 2014 4:43 pm Hi offshore - wish I had done that, but I never got given any options like that and at the time a a novice I had no idea. All I knew was there was a $7k display upgrade (i.e. list of upgrades to match the display), I picked the exact same colour scheme and paid for the upgrade to acrylic, but my finish and the display are worlds apart. Luckily I still have the display there to compare. Hi Building Expert - btw I enjoy reading your posts - yes I have asked to meet the construction manager on site. They have been good to correct any issues so far, this however will be an expensive job and I have a feeling they will push back. Last time I showed the supervisor and particularly the worst areas and he told me he thinks it looks fine but I could contact the construction manager. The construction manager said the rest of the house was fine but the worst side could do with a recoat (upon further investigation apparently a leak caused an issue and they used 2 different batches on that wall). But the fix up looks the same, no improvement we can see. Hi oncewerefurriers - wish me luck! I called 2 Dulux stores on the weekend and was advised acrashield or a simple weathershield paint will get me the finish I want, but of course that costs money and I've already lost $7k on the upgrade. Re: Acrylic render issues 10Mar 02, 2014 10:35 pm Good luck. The added advantage of Acrashield is that you get a 15 year warranty (if done by an approved installer) from Dulux. So although there's additional cost now, you won't need to re-coat it for a long time. If you're happy with the colour and can live with it for a long time, it may be worth it. Since it's a paint-on finish it's relatively cheap. We were quoted $22/sqm ($30 with the builder's 37% mark-up). See if you can negotiate a decent price for good will from your buider. He was surprised we wanted to as acrylic render colour lasts longer without fading (and we had paid for it) but was happy to do it. The display home had apparently been acrylic rendered then painted over as well which is why the colour was more consistent. We asked him to just do the front of the house, to get the new look we wanted on our front facade. Thanks for all your help forum members. Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
