Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Support for Granite bench sink cutout 3Feb 09, 2014 6:29 pm I am sure both cabinet makers and stone masons have dealt with this previously as your set up does not sound unusual. There are a few of those trades that regularly post here and hopefully they can shed some light. If not I would ask the cabinet maker and the stone mason what they usually do in this situation. Sorry no real help other than stating the obvious. Cheers Mark Re: Support for Granite bench sink cutout 4Feb 09, 2014 6:57 pm Still not sure what to do, but I'm now getting quotes on getting undermount sinks installed. We don't have any, and it would mean the sink we've got would now be a waste of money, but at least it would take up less bench space, meaning it would just be over the main cupboard. It's really not what I'd planned - and we wouldn't be able to do it ourselves as the edges where it gets installed would have to be nice and neat and to be polished. So a lot more expensive - but maybe something to consider. And it would look flash at least! Re: Support for Granite bench sink cutout 5Feb 10, 2014 6:22 am All stone masons that I have used cut the sink hole before the install the tops. Sure you can do it the other way around but you will fill your kitchen, cabinets, hinges and runners with stone dust! If it was CaesarStone then you wouldn't need any other support. If its granite then there should be a solid melamine top above the dishwasher. There are parts that are quite narrow round a sink and it could be an "oh Sh!T" moment. I thought the holes are cut out first to be honest. Cheers Mark Re: Support for Granite bench sink cutout 7Feb 10, 2014 9:12 am Yes we were aware there would be a big mess - thats ok. Not being stone masons, and not wanting to risk it breaking while we were moving it and possibly getting the measurements slightly wrong we decided to do it this way - and now thats what we have to work with. This is also the way they did the marble vanities in our bathrooms - installed the stone, then cut the holes for the sink and plumbing. Smaller cuts, so less dust, but same principle. I think we're leaning towards undermount now anyway though... Re: Support for Granite bench sink cutout 8Feb 10, 2014 11:06 am saxlady I think we're leaning towards undermount now anyway though... An under mount is a whole different kettle of fish!! The cut needs to be very precise and then needs to be fully polished! Most under mount bowl cut outs are done on a CNC machine in a factory! The cut has to be accurate and polished. Stonemasons charge more for it than a simple cutout for a countertop sink. Think carefully that you are not disappointed with the result later. As CEK said, a neat and proper cut would normally be done by a machine. 4 3819 0 10693 Have had stone benches with undermount sink (kitchen) and drop-in (laundry) and top-mounted basin (bathrooms) for coming up 13 years and not one chip/scratch of any kind.… 2 9765 |
