We don't plan to use it in winter only summer and a month or two on each side, I guess. I imagine gradual heat and then maintaining that heat. I think it will work similar to reverse cycle AC. I am more wondering how much does it cost to install gas heating? We turned it off in October - and swim every day. I'm not going to bother now in deep winter - eg June/July. As I said - the blanket really helps - so long as you are willing to roll it out every night and maybe leave it on for a few sunny days in winter. The heat really builds up. Our self cleaner also stirs the water up and moves the warmer water to the bottom. Re: Pool heating Gas vs Electric 9Feb 04, 2014 5:22 pm With a pool that size a quality heat pump will cost around $9000 . a 450 mj gas heater will cost you around $5000. You may need to upgrade your meter as well Running cost will vary greatly depending on shade , blanket fitted ,water depth, & temp you want the water. If you used your pool twice a week the gas would work out cheaper to run . If you want constant warmth a heat pump will cost less. I personally would put a oversize solar system on it . You said it wasn't for use in winter. Upfront about the same as gas but a lot. Lower running cost . You said it wasn't for use in winter. Upfront about the same as gas but a lot. Lower running cost . We have the heat pump. But don't use it in Summer/Spring. Or most of Autumn. We also have solar E - so if we heat at the right times its good re costs. But also use the blanket as I said. We left blanket on for about a week one time and water was almost too hot. It is quite good for insulation. Aspect is very important. Ours is at the back of the house - facing north - so gets sun almost all day. The sun is really the best heater imo ... Agree on depth - if you have a very deep end the water at the bottom can stay cold. Our cleaning system stirs the water about - so the warmer top water moves to the bottom etc. But - as I said - heaters can add significantly to the cost if you use them in the colder months. Unfortunately - everything costs money ... Re: Pool heating Gas vs Electric 13Feb 18, 2014 9:27 pm The reason we aren't looking at solar is we have had it before with our last pool. The main reason we got it last time was because it was the most affordable option at that time. For it to work it requires he use. Of electricity and solar power, and your rely heavily on the weather conditions. It can take quite a few warm sunny days to get the pool temp up nice. Whereas with electricity it is more user controlled, so the idea is you can regulate the temp better and maintains better temp over more days, errors getting more usage out of our pool. And don't forget in winter - especially - to use the blanket. It really does hold the heat in. If cost both upfront & running are not an issue use a heat pump. A good solar system not a cheap system will work well on your pool. look a running 200% coverage .
