Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: Flat Roof Pergola 4Oct 05, 2008 8:44 am The laser light is the see through stuff. Lots of people have an occasional sheet of it in their pergola roofs even if the rest of the roof is colorbond as it lets some light through. It doesn't have to be completely see through as you can get colour tinted sheets. ie white, green etc.
hence the query on your roofing: 1. full colorbond 2 full laser light ( gets very bright and and so tends to be extra warm. My inlaws have a pergola with green tinted laser light panels over the full pergola roof and it is very bright in there) 3 mostly colorbond with several laser light panels for additional light. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 6Oct 08, 2008 12:40 am I honestly couldnt give u a price without looking at the job and pricing materials. Possibly if you were to post some pics of the area I could give you a rough estimate to help with when you do get some official quotes. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 8Oct 09, 2008 11:48 pm Sorry to hijack for a moment.
Luke, I'm abit unfamilar with pergolas at this stage (trying to do research on it now), I was just wondering how it works. Does the post bear all the weight of the pergola? If the pergola spans 7m, do you need a post smack bang in the middle of the peergola to help with sagging? It wouldnt be practical if there was right? Are pergolas the same with posts, bearers and joist just like the foundation of a deck? Also, what is the price of the laser lites? Will they be strong enough to withstand bambo type things put over them? Sorry about all the questions, just trying to understand. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 9Oct 14, 2008 7:35 am ukekamaya

I want it 3m by 5.5m, do you need anyother dimension?? Regards, Amalner Re: Flat Roof Pergola 10Oct 14, 2008 6:59 pm Wondeland you can span 7m with a verandah beam if your willing to spend the money on a beam capable of doing the job. That being said one post in the middle of a 7 metre span would save you around $500.
A typical pergola has (from the bottom up) posts-verandah beam-rafters and battens. Generally they are constructed out of treated pine though you can use a durability 1 or 2 hardwood. I did mine in grey ironbark. Amalner, is the 3 or 5.5 length across the house? Is it attached or freestanding. What is the approx. height? Do you want to use treated pine or hardwood? Your pergola is pretty much what i want to do to my house. I've had a look again at my plans again and I think i will probably build a pergola that is 5m (l) x 6m (w). It will be attached to the house. This would mean that the beam will be 5m long and the battens & rafter will be 6m long. $500 is quite alot of money, i would rather have a small pergola. What is the longest span of treated pine that i can get away? Thanks. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 13Oct 14, 2008 8:27 pm davinci DUKE. a spec. LVL would do 7 + mtrs in total span unsupported, but lamintaed can look a bit crapola Yes mate an LVL13 would need to be minimum 360x63mm from memory and that was fairly loaded. A hardwood LVL18 would be a better choice in my opinion and the finish is much better- I think the size was around 260x65mm min. The LVL13 would also have to be H3 treated. I did look at options for a 7 metre single span for my own carport using TasDesign8 though it was a while ago so my memory is a little rusty - the spans as you will know also vary greatly depending on the RLW. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 14Oct 14, 2008 10:18 pm If beam size is an issue to span the distance you require and you don't want to use a big 360mm beam as that wont look too good, then you can just double up some smaller width beams such as kd hardwood and laminate them together. Looks much better and is more practical than a big beam. Looks much better and is more practical than a big beam. You don't get KD hardwood over 6 metres in length - nail plate joining is even uglier IMO. We used (approx) 460 x 85 LVL13 on a large roof at work. They look fine painted. The beam spans about 8 metres with 14 metre rafters butting into it. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 16Oct 16, 2008 10:33 pm By not looking to good im not meaning the finish of the beam but the size of the beam. Depending on the height of the pergola, a beam over 360mm in width could just look too big if you know what I mean. Re: Flat Roof Pergola 17Oct 18, 2008 6:45 pm Yeah thats true, it could also pose a height problem too.
