Keyless Entry

Hi,

I am building a home and have been interested in the Lockwood Nexion Keyless Entry Lockset for the front door handle. It uses the same technolgy as automotive keyless entry, just push the button and the door unlocks...and it still has a keyhole if the battery dies.

Does anyone have any experience with these type of systems and/or provide any feedback as to whether this is a good or bad idea

I like the ability to be able to set indoor locking on or off. Great with kids.

Any idea on price?

I saw these breifly on the weekend at my local hardware and from memory they were about $355. Not 100% sure though as I didn't look too closely. I have french opening front doors and didn't think they'd be suitable.

You don't have to get off your bum to open the door... similar to the TV argument in the 80's!!

Yeah I know that you can put it down but it doesn't work like that. 10 bags of shopping, the kids jackets under one arm, a backpack under the other, post tucked under the chin and how the heck do you open the door.

Beep what and you're in ? Do you have a little remote like a car ?

So you need to get the remote out of your pocket and beep it - rather than getting the key out of your pocket and inserting it into the lock ?

I admit I'm a gadget freak, but that seems a bit weak.

Now, if if were voice-activated.... (no wait, I can imagine it being a neighbourhood game to talk to my door to get it to open).

He CB, I reckon the remote would work fine. As your getting out of the car, press the unlock doors button, grab the stuff, walk to the door and it's open.

There could be a security issue here, ie someone ie (thief etc) could duck inside the house as soon as you unlock it.
Or you press the remote accidentally as you leave and the house unlocks for the day.
I know of someone with a remote for their security system and that sometimes happens as the leave.

Personally I think an RFID pass (ie like a modern building pass card) would work better, more secure and you just have the reader at hip height, (ie pocket) and put your leg to the wall, Yes it looks like you humping the wall)

but guess what the door opens.

If only it worked with everything like that ???

For what it's worth we're currently developing a project for a client to track people onto a site for time and attendance and other issues and this unit does Fingerprint, RFID and pin number authentication as well as door opening.

We can poll it via the internet to track who has entered and when, run their payroll and other details with the data.

But it'd be a great way to track if your kids actually got home when they said they would :shock:

But at $2.2k it's out of the reach of most home owners.

We're also doing a voice control project - hence i really undertsand the HAL comments I made earlier.

Yeah I think they look great. The door doesnt actually open, just unlocks, like car doors. Keep the remote in the car or on the keyring and with the press of a button the door is locked (or unlocked). Easy.

They come in 4 different handle/knob styles and 3 different finishes. Im thinking of getting the satin chrome finish with one of the handles. I have seen them for around $330.

My ideal system would be one where I press the remote button and using the alarm system, all doors and windows in the house are checked to see if they are closed. If anything is open, then an alert lets me know. If everything is closed, all doors and windows are electronically locked and the alarm activated.

When I get home, pressing another button unlocks everything and deactivated the alarm.

they had this one in the paper this week, herald-sun i think. was around the $400 mark from memory.... you can have many prints and set and delete them - ie, can give a tradie access for a single day to work on the house then remove access etc...

We are getting the Nexion keyless entry...heard it is very convenient coz apart from opening from the outside you can open the door from the inside...you can hang your remote next to your monitor and let your guests in if you are busy in the kitchen...I know it can be a bit rude but handy when you need it...cant tell you how good it is yet..will let you know in a few months time... :lol:

I have the nexion installed in my new home. The remote is exactly like a car keyless remote, so is attached to my keyring. It works well espcially at night time in the dark, all you have to do is reach into your pocket and press the remote button, no need to search for keys.

The settings are configurable also, but I havent had the need to play with them yet.

I personally hate the smell of keys (I know, I'm a freak) and absolutelly hate them. This is why we will be getting keyless entry

I prefer the finger scanner option. No one can steel the finger and I can't loose it.
Remotes get lost I have to get them out of my pocket. The finger is unique and it's easy to use, even for kids.
Combined with an automated multi-point lock it's a very safe options.
Plus you could operate other things from the same scanner - e.g. garage door or alarm system.
