Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jan 11, 2014 8:22 am Hi guys As stated in the topic the size of my HT that we will be building is 4040 x 3600 For starters, should I get a projector or a bigger LED/LCD tv? and would I mount it on the short or long wall? 5.1 or 7.1 setup? Not sure if the room is big enough for a 7.1.. Are there any other ideas or recommendations? Thanks in advance! Re: 4040 x 3600 Home theater room, recommendations? 2Jan 11, 2014 9:54 pm My home theatre is 4300 x 3455 ( so a similar size to yours ). I have a 300mm bulkhead on the 3455 wall and between this I am going with a 100 inch fixed projector screen. If you decide to go for a projector, make sure you carefully check specs of projectors you are looking to get. The size of the screen you want will partly determine where the projector needs to be located. In my case at approx 3700mm from the screen ( will fit with just enough clearance from my coffered ceiling. I decided to go with a 7.1 setup. I am having rectanglar in-wall speakers installed ( to reduce room clutter in a relatively compact room ). My speakers are from The Cable Connection. Subbie is just a floor-standing unit. I'll see how it looks once installed. I may but some fabric-covered frames up for decorating and to hide the speakers. My house is still being built so have no photos to share. How is light control in the room? Are there windows and where are they located? 2. Is it dedicated for movies or will you have regular TV viewing also? 3. Do you have a layout image of the room? 4. Do you already have any equipment like speakers or receiver? 5. Are you wanting one long couch or recliners? 6. What's your budget for the room? Where possible I would mount the screen on the short wall. Gives you a greater depth for better audio and space for rear speakers if going 7.1. Re: 4040 x 3600 Home theater room, recommendations? 4Jan 13, 2014 1:13 pm The room will be too small for a 7.1 setup. You want the rear speakers to be at least a meter behind your seating position to allow for separation from the sound output by the surrounds, which ideally will be with 90-110 degrees from the seating position. Too many people squeeze in 7.1 setups where the room simply isn't big enough and a 5.1 system would be sufficient/sound better. Also take into account that the majority of digital content is in 5.1, with 7.1 much less frequent. Most amps have calibration tools that will adjust the levels to allow for separation. Although many films are shot with 5.1 there are also a great deal of action movies that come with 7.1. I would look at in-wall speakers to streamline looks or angled speakers that can be mounted higher. I think it may be possible depending on what seating is being used. Will there be one row? I would think two rows will be a squeeze. I would go a four seat in the double loveseat combo, that way every one gets one armrest. Spillover could be handles with cushions... I would go projector and aim for a light controlled room. Plug the windows and cover with thick curtains. Projectors give the immersion experience. Good luck.... Eli_ Need a little more info: 1. How is light control in the room? Are there windows and where are they located? Planning on installing LED downlights.. There will be one big window (refer to image) 2. Is it dedicated for movies or will you have regular TV viewing also? Mainly movies with the odd ps3 and tv shows 3. Do you have a layout image of the room? 4. Do you already have any equipment like speakers or receiver? I do have an old Yamaha 5.1 receiver with speakers, but will want to upgrade later on. 5. Are you wanting one long couch or recliners? One long couch 6. What's your budget for the room? No budget yet, but the less the better according to the wife Where possible I would mount the screen on the short wall. Gives you a greater depth for better audio and space for rear speakers if going 7.1. Re: 4040 x 3600 Home theater room, recommendations? 8Jan 16, 2014 11:44 pm Audessey will compensate for the different levels. You could also have the sides mounted higher and angled down. In a real cinema speakers are not all the same level either. When you say should you mount it on the long or short wall, it doesn't look like you have too many options! The only way to swing 90 degrees (without boarding up that window - low WAF) would be to have a pull down screen come down in front of it. If that is an option then all good, but otherwise you are stuck with the seating where it is in that picture. I would go 5.1 in that room, as you have room to wall mount speakers to the sides of the couch on the walls there. If going a projector I'm guessing you will be sitting approx 3400 from the screen, from that distance I would go about 110" 16:9 fixed frame screen (unless you specifically want to go cinemascope), but test what's comfortable for you. I'd recommend a screen from Rich at Oztheatre screens, but if budget is restricted then maybe a cheaper one from Selby. Just remember you will need a projector that handles a 3.4m throw to get an image that size. Because I'm not sure what budget you have, or your expectations, I will suggest something like a BenQ W1070 - it will do that throw for a 110" screen and is great value for the picture you get at approx $900. If you want to spend more than that then all good too, just make sure you don't suffer the rainbow effect from DLP projectors (happens to a small amount of people). For someone who hasn't used a projector before this would probably look amazing. I would also get the speaker points wired during framing stage, also run HDMI to the roof going back to where your receiver will be. Remember that you will have the projector sitting above your head if ceiling or shelf mounted. They are just suggestions, and to be honest pretty modest priced ones. You could easily buy a $5k projector and $2k screen, but I'm only guessing at how much money you are talking ("no budget" doesn't really mean too much). I think if trying to keep some money saved then these would be great bang-for-buck.
