You can either get it on line through SAI Global or from your local Tafe. If you are building a simple house in a non cyclonic area get AS1684.4 which is the simplified guide and is easy to use. You could obstensibly design you whole house from the guidance in the book and not require an engineer. I just built a timber framed home and it was the best thing to have in the tool box. Our structural engineer used to have a rough guideline of one row for 450mm spacings and two for 600mm spaced studs but that was just a general rule of thumb that he wanted us to follow where possible. I'm unsure how that applies to the AS but the walls used to feel stiffer with two rows opposed to one.
