The electrician told us as much, but at that stage we’d not moved in and I didn’t really understand the full extent of the suckiness. The light in question is within the ceiling fan, which has a remote control. I can’t remember if it also has a normal wall switch controller (the ones you turn around to change the fan settings, etc). I originally just thought it was a rather unattractive light, but now the issue is much worse. The actual light is utterly terrible. The current bulbs in there are 40 watts, which is dim anyway and not suited for ceiling lights when you need proper light (for typing, and other computer work, reading, playing music, etc), and what’s worse is that right now only one bulb is working (the electrician said these lights blow very frequently), so I literally cannot see the keyboard as I type. It’s so dark in there. Anyway, I’ve tried putting in energy efficient bulbs in different wattages (between 40 and 70w), and none of them will work. They all FIT just fine, but when I switch the light on, it flicks brightly and then goes out. Doesn’t work (the bulbs remain undamaged and work in other light fittings, just not this one). I’ve tried using just one bulb, but nope. They’re obviously too strong. I’ve tried normal (non energy efficient) bulbs in there but they also don’t work. Only these stupid dim 40w ones do. It’s so annoying not to be able to see! Does anyone else know anything about this? Is this normal for ceiling fans with light fittings built in? Is it possible to change the fitting to one that can house PROPER bulbs? Is it possible to put a whole new separate oyster light in the ceiling nearby? (the room is fairly small and there’s not a heap of room on the ceiling aside from the fan). AAAGH! I need to seeeee! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! For typing and working on the computer - our EHS/OHS guidelines usually state that specific direct light like a desk lamp is better than general room lighting. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 3Oct 02, 2008 12:27 pm Really? We’re going to put one of those nice green & gold bar type lamps on the desk, but I really need proper overhead light too! We play music…my partner plays guitars and I play the keyboard and we need light!
I don’t really know any fan places around here, but there are a few light places. I may call the electrician guy again and see what he can do. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 4Oct 02, 2008 12:42 pm Look up your fan on the web. Because you're using a remote control, whatever is switching your light can't handle high wattages (over 40W) or the type of load that a CFL presents.
The manufacturers web site should have information on how to get CFLs to work. I’ve accepted that unless I get stuff changed or whatever, this light will never be able to take energy efficient bulbs, so I’ve now stuck 2 60watt normal bulbs in. I don’t care if they go every month like all the bulbs in our old place did, at least I can seeeee! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 7Oct 04, 2008 12:21 am All the lights in our place are screw-ins, no bayonette (bc) ones at all. All our lamps are bayonettes. *losing track of the million light globes I've purchased lately* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 10Oct 04, 2008 6:22 pm Nope, no dimmer.
The light fittings in the fan light part are screw-ins, and there's no dimmer, and none of the energy efficient globes would work. Not anything from 45watts to 65watts. Nothing. (the normal globes that were in there were 40watts, and now there are normal 60watt ones in there and they work fine) There is a remote control for this fan, and no wall operation switch. Just the fan. Would this work like a dimmer in that it would result in energy efficient globes not working? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 11Oct 04, 2008 6:47 pm can you adjust the brightness with the remote? or just turn it off and on?
Sorry but i am a bit dumb here, the energy efficient globes are they compact fluros? do you have a brand and model number for the fan? Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 12Oct 04, 2008 6:59 pm Oh wow. I just had a look at the actual remote and yes it DOES have a dimmer AND you can control the light and the fan using it. Ahhh, that'd be why. I am the dumb one here it seems!!! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 15Oct 04, 2008 8:29 pm So, has the dimming setting been set to anything less than full? CFLs may work when there is no dimming. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 18Nov 20, 2008 6:02 pm You know, it's all good now that I'm just using normal old fashioned light bulbs. I just can't use the energy efficient ones cause of the dimmer/remote function, that's all.
However, I'm gonna have to do something about that when they eventually phase out all old fashioned light bulbs and all you can buy are energy efficient ones. *gulp* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ceiling fan light in study SUCKS! So dim! 19Mar 05, 2009 5:13 pm Light kits can be added to increase the usefulness of many ceiling fans. A wide range of both fan and light kit styles is available, providing choices, or maybe try to search in some site that related in your topic...
