Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 11, 2013 11:31 am Hi Everyone Our home is due to be handed over at the end of January. I have a few weeks off over Christmas so I thought I would spend some time spraying and clearing our block as we will be doing all of our own landscaping after handover. What would be the best products and method to do this? We have our block is 650m2 and there are weeds and crab grass around the whole perimeter of the fence line, and also coming in a approximately 5 or so meters from the back fence. This will be my first time doing any type of landscaping so any and all advice is appreciated - I want to get off on the right foot Thanks! Re: Killing off weeds on building site 2Dec 11, 2013 2:26 pm I am also interested in any replies or advice. Hubby and I were just going to get that concentrated weed killer and dilute into pump backpack thingies and spray the whole block that way. It's easy enough to mix & apply just make sure you wear gloves. Also adding some food dye to the mixture is a good idea so you can tell which parts of your block you have covered. Your other option is to get a professional in; I had a contractor come & fix my cape weed infestation at a cost of $300. That may be money well spent if you want to spend some of your time off work relaxing Re: Killing off weeds on building site 6Dec 13, 2013 11:23 am Great idea about the food colouring. I would be using glyphosate 360 concentrate (1l is about $10!!! and it goes a long way) and dillute it to the specs and leave it just a tad stronger in case you miss some areas. Then I would apply it carefully from those standard plastic 10 litre watering cans, not any other way, since it would give you a proper "soaking" IMO. Yes, it will take time, but I found those "prof" sprayers are so prone to mulfunctioning that you'd quickly not only lose time in trying to fix them, but also lose your mind along the way! (unless you invest in a really good quality exy sprayer) One thing - you will have to wait quite a while to see any effect, in some areas even about 2 weeks (but some faster)! Also, one really important hint - if it's been really dry for weeks before you spray, it is much better to give the whole area a very good watering an hour or 2 before spraying (even on the day before as well, just in case) AND also water it again if it's still hot and dry with no rain some 1 - 1.5 - 2 days AFTER you spray (and there is no rain in near sight!). Otherwise, the poison just can't be taken up. Noticed this even on deadly stuff such as path weeder - you must water after 1+ day of application or your effort will be for nothing (dont water earlier than 24 hrs, as obviously it would also be wasted, too dilluted - check the instructions but I'm sure most of the weed killers say it should not rain within 24 hrs of application, so same goes for watering). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Killing off weeds on building site 9Dec 14, 2013 12:27 pm Try and obtain some Roundup Attack from any stock or station store. This is a commercial strength that farmers use and will eradicate anything. It is much stronger than anything a hardware store will sell and goes much further, although is a fair bit more expensive as well. We use 150ml in 10 litres water in a back pack sprayer. Failing that a professional weed spraying person to come in and spray would be the best option as this is the same product or similar he will be using. Once sprayed nothing else is needed. It is rain and water fast so wont wash off. Works best in nice warm weather. If no wind 300-400mm high. Anything more than a slight breeze don't spray if your worried about the neighbours and drift. Essentially it won't drift far but if spraying next to neighbours plants use a large piece of cardboard between the plants and where you are spraying and all should be good. Failing that have someone following you hose the neighbours plants straight after you spray. Have done that a few times weith no problems.
