Browse Forums Buying Land 1 Nov 20, 2013 7:48 pm Hi Guys,I'm looking to get some information on past experiences people have had with building on compacted fill.Essentially i'm looking to build on a sloping block which would require cut and fill. Now essentially the block is located near the foot of a hill in once very productive farm land, the land is great for farming but not so great for building on. The soil report came back not so good. Clayey silt down to roughly a metre before hitting a firm silty clay. Essentially those of you familiar with the Drouin area in Vic or live in generally hilly areas now that its common practice to cut into the land build it up and throw a few retaining walls around and hey presto here is your house. I however am new to the area and wanted to get some information on building on compacted fill. The area we will be filling is about 1.6m at its worst. Over the slope of the block the average depth is probably around 1m. We intend to get the fill compacted to compaction level 1 (correct me if im wrong) to build a house on. So my question is. If compact the fill what benefits are foreseeable in terms of slab costs? If we don't compact the fill it may be a case of screw piles or concrete piles for the slab but have heard in the past of people building rigid slabs on compacted fill. anyone done this and what were your soil conditions? Re: compacted fill 2Nov 20, 2013 9:16 pm My block was filled with compacted, compaction done by land developer. Overall piering depth went to 100lm. When they do the piering, went to natural ground level High site cost, only benefit is slab will be more stronger because thicker slab plus around 45 piers all the piers depth went up 2.9m deep. Re: compacted fill 3Nov 21, 2013 4:48 pm What was the associated cost? 100 linear metres of piles ok We are looking at 1.6m of compacted fill and 1m further down to firm clay but wondered if the compacted fill actually adds any bearing capacity which would reduce the need for piles 2 4356 yeah i couldnt picture it issue either, but i could clearly picture what they were doing wrong haha 2 5301 If you're in a flood zone, not only are you dealing with the importation of fill and laying it down in 150 lifts to achieve compaction, you're going to have to consider… 4 5537 |
