Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 26, 2013 7:22 am Hi, I recently got a quote via The Good Guys for installing a 3.5kw split system aircon on a double storey house. When the installer visited my house to inspect he said it should be around $900, being $650 for standard install, $175 for roof bracket, and possible extra cable to meter box. This seemed reasonable to me. When I went to organize a time for the install the quote changed to $1275, being $650 for standard install, $175 for bracket and $400 for additional 15 metres of electric cable. Does electric cable really cost $400 for an extra 15 metres? That's over half the cost of a standard install which already includes 15 metres.. Thanks for any advice! They quoted you a price AFTER looking at it. Thjey knew how much cable they needed. Go to Bing Lee. At least they're honest. I have never been able to find a better price with the Good Guys so have never purchased from them. I have a great AC installer that I have used a fair bit with my IP's if you are in Sydney. PM me if you want his number. Re: Split system quote surprise 3Oct 26, 2013 8:59 am wow thats 27 per meter. I would have thought only a couple of dollars per meter myself, after all, its not like you are running speaker wire or something. I would take it up with the the Good Guys but I suspect the installer does not actually work for them. Check your invoice to see whether the small print has any clause that says that the installer owns the product until the bill is paid in full. It could mean he could rip the cable out. Ring a sparkie and get a ballpark of what 15m of appropriate cable would cost. and take it up with the installer via Good Guys. Good luck. The installer I believe is not part of Good Guys but they have a close relationship, my impression is he is the only person doing installations for that store. Thanks for the offer, I'm in Melbourne unfortunately. I will ask around for some other quotes and see what I can find. Would you believe that the first quote I had was $2800 to supply and install a 2.5kw unit.. and they had a copy of my house plans so they knew exactly what was required. SO yeh their ripping you off. Good guys need to make money out of your install as do the installer so your paying a premium to allow for good guys cut. I not sure but sounds like if their using a roof bracket it will be mounted on your roof two stories up. So depending on access you will need a boom to get the unit to that height. Roof installations are the hardest type so I would understand if there was limited access for that price. Easy access should be around the 950 mark would be fair. edit:Just noticed your in melbourne.. give me a buzz if you like.
