Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Oct 08, 2013 9:49 am I'd like to install some basic flooring in my attic so I can shove some cardboard boxes up there for long term storage. Some questions about floor installation: 1. What type of wood should I use for the flooring? 2. Are my joists strong enough to take the weight (I see 140 x 35 and 90 x 35) - please see pics. 3. Does the flooring need to be vermin and fire proof? 4. Any other tips? Thanks in advance, any advice is most appreciated. Stewie D You need to tell us a bit more. 1 18mm ply or yellow tongue flooring can span 450mm but that depends on your answer to 2 OK 2 What is the spacing of the joists and what is their span ? 850mm x 480mm 3 No because none of your roof or ceiling framing is either. OK 4 a Don't compromise any of your ceiling lighting by covering it up with flooring or insulation - that's how fires start. OK, there is only one bulb up there which will not be covered. b why don't you have sarking or blanket insulation under your roofing? It was that way when I bought the place a year ago. c how were you thinking of getting those big 2400 x 1200mm sheets of ply or 3600 x 900mm yellow tongue sheets up there? Cut them to size to fit through the attic ladder gap. Stewie Re: Advice on installing flooring in roof for attic storage 4Oct 12, 2013 5:57 am Define Quote: shove some cardboard boxes up there The weight of two or three sheets of ply up there adds another 60kg of load to your ceiling framing then the weight of whatever you shove up there. I'd look to boost the size of your joists up to at least 250 x 50mm spaced at 450mm centres just as a rough guide. A structural engineer would have a more accurate assessment of your situation. I'd be careful with the load you place on the ceiling framing. A few empty boxes is one thing - twenty boxes filled with books is another. Stewie Hi everyone!
