For north facing glass, you want to go clear. This way the low winter sun hits your slab and warms the inside of the house. In summer, the high summer sun can be shaded. If you want privacy, consider screens perpendicular to the window that give you privacy without blocking the winter sun. Are you considering solar hot water panels to heat/assist heating your in-slab hydronics? traditional timber joinery and the hardware that comes with it is not necessarily suitable for double glazing. There is the weight issue. (especially french doors bi-fold and sliders) The rebates need to have drainage and ventilation otherwise the lifespan of the glass unit could be limited. A worldwide recognized and longterm proven system is the IV68 timber window and door system. It is designed for double glazing, the hardware is designed to take the weight (double compared to single glazing!!) and the multipoint locking hardware is adjustable. IV68 windows are made by www.paarhammer.com.au Probably not the cheapest but you can be sure it is the best value for money and you do it ones and do it right!!!!! I knew that standard timber frames aren't designed to handle the size/weight of double glazing...but I just assumed that the 'window people' would tell us what was needed in that regard! Thanks for the link WindowExpert...i don't suppose you know if they supply much to Canberra of there is a local supplier that uses the same 'hardware'? Casa2...to be honest, I hadn't really thought about it a lot! Our building designer suggested in-slab hydronics as the best option...and all I knew was that we need a boiler to run it! I guess I need to do a lot more research!! Hi, I'd like some advice on the best option please on the estimate options we've been provided from our builder.
