Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 27, 2013 4:56 pm Hi, very new to renovating, so will be grateful for people correcting any incorrect assumptions I may have made. I live in VIC, we've just bought a 1950's weatherboard in what appears to be pretty good condition. Apart from the Laundry which is pretty rank. There is only one shower and toilet in the house, so we're considering adding a shower and toilet to the (already small) laundry to cope with visitors that we usually have for up to 3 months of the year. Every year. The washing machine, door, window and laundry basin will remain in the same place, and the costs will be under 10K, as my partner is reasonably handy and can do the work himself, where permitted. However, he's not renovated in Australia before, so we want to make sure we've taken any regulations into account. Does anyone know if and when I need to worry about planning and/or building permits for something like that? And if I need them, what the timeframes are? Can I forget about getting a 2nd toilet before Christmas crowd arrive? I also understand we need to get qualified trades for the plumbing/electrics/waterproofing work? Is that correct? Can he do tiling himself? Fitting cabinets? Splashbacks etc ( after correct warerproofing ) I'm pretty sure this is going to be the first of many questions. Re: Add Toilet/Shower to Laundry 2May 27, 2013 6:54 pm For a reno like that you don't need any building permits. You are required by law to get a licensed plumber and sparky but a lot of people will do the disconnect themselves. From what I understand you are allowed to do the waterproofing but don't quote me on that. We've got a plumber coming in, I guess we can double check with him about the waterproofing, but I'm hoping to have general budget idea and schedule pencilled in before he turns up. Will we need sparky if we don't move the plugs for the washing machine?
