From what they've said to us (which is not very much) all the area at the back is "future public open area" The stairs will give us access to that area from our backyard. Apparently this is a council requirement. I don't know how much they are planning to clear, I hope they leave some of the trees. But there is a lovely big tree to the side of our land that looks marked for clearing.
