Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Wedding or house 22May 01, 2013 7:40 pm Buy the house and get married in the backyard ? I don't regret a cent of our $25k wedding, but it was in the context that we already had our first home, and had received an inheritance which was enough to finish renovating it, put a deposit on an investment property, and go overseas for a month visiting family. If I weren't in such a favorable position at the time I would have bought a house and had a much smaller wedding. Having said that, our $15k is really reasonable. Can you afford to borrow a bit extra (and pay more lender's mortgage insurance) so you can have both? We are pretty set on investment etc. but at the same time do try to find a balance between setting ourselves up for future retirement in 25+ years and gaining enjoyment out of our money / lives in the present. So we bought a block of land, a year later got married, had enough equity a short time after to start building. Worked out great! Third build now and three kiddies Re: Wedding or house 25May 01, 2013 9:46 pm We are building at the moment and our wedding is set for 4 April 2014. We wanted to be in the house before having the wedding, and we had saved enough for both of them to do them in any order. Realistically, if we had waited to do the house second, the land prices have gone up about $15k since November so we would of lost out almost the cost of the wedding! So I would say house first then wedding Re: Wedding or house 26May 01, 2013 9:57 pm This is really a matter of preference, and something you can only answer yourself! Our wedding cost around $20k, and we were extremely lucky in that my parents paid for it. I am so happy we didn't have to sacrifice anything, and I wouldn't have wanted to do a 'cheap' wedding. Now we are both 24, married, and living in our house. Leading up to building the house, our sacrificial question wasn't wedding vs house, but holidays vs house. Up until last year, we'd been going overseas twice a year, which we did have to sacrifice for the house - now we can only afford to go once a year. A slow decline...once we have kids, it'll probably be none! My advice - don't try to do both at once, if possible! Our slab was laid a couple of days after we got home from our honeymoon (which we paid for ourselves). Planning a wedding and a house at the same time was so stressful, but still fun. But still would have been better and more enjoyable doing one at a time! Haha. 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Wedding or house 27May 01, 2013 10:27 pm devinz Hey all,. I am getting married in October wedding is about $15,000 - yet we have enough money saved now for a deposit on a house. So wondering what would you do buy the house first or pay of the wedding. We both have full time jobs and make good money. Just reading your comments, you look set on October wedding (6 months away). If you are both making good money and able to save money, then saving $15K in the next 6 months could be possible. That will mean that you house is put back 6 month. What is 6 months in the big picture? Also just remember, the word mortgage in Old French words mort, "dead," and gage, "pledge." To do with the doubtfulness of whether or not the mortgagor will pay the debt Re: Wedding or house 28May 02, 2013 11:11 pm I would say house first but I am someone who has been engaged for years and know what I want but have never organised it lol. I wouldn't say spend less on the wedding to get the house though if that is the wedding you want. As you can see everyone's perspective on the perfect day is so different. My family is a perfect example of this. My mum got married in the registry office and regretted not having a gorgeous day so much she has always been set on basically having her perfect day through me. My plan on the perfect wedding is all about the ceremony. Gorgeous garden in the Barossa Valley, my guy dressed up all handsome for me telling me he will put up with me forever lol then tell everyone we will see you at the pub haha. In conclusion, I say get your house first because it will last such a long time but also have your perfect day whatever that may be Building the Leabrook with Fairmont Homes in Mallala, SA. I would dare say though the markup on wedding apparel and associated items probably exceeds that of most project builders! Some of my friends have spent upwards of 30k on wedding/honeymoon then had to scrimp and save for a deposit afterwards (and missing out on 'dream homes' because of it) Simply putting some of that (lets say 20k) into a 400k loan at current interest rate saves $150/month (or $1700/year) in the initial repayment stages. Re: Wedding or house 31Nov 09, 2013 7:25 pm It truly is personal choice and everyone is different that's what makes life so interesting. We had already bought our first house before we got married and I think we spent approx $4k getting married back in 1998 ( we've been living together for 23 years now so you can do the maths!) If I didn't have a house I probably would have gone house as I said to my DH I felt that we were joined together when we signed the mortgage papers! <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Good on you for having a go I am the opposite of DIY (so will pay a builder) - our vibe is industrial/simple so current thinking is 150mm concrete and then internally is… 3 17101 No idea about the driveway question, but your price for a house that size including landscaping seems very good! 1 22241 of course there are legal avenues.
