Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 27, 2013 9:43 pm Hi everyone,
Im probably starting this a bit late as we are just about to start the brick stage. Ive enjoyed reading other people's posts here so I thought I would share our building journey, and hopefully get a few tips and ideas along the way! We bought a property in Kalamunda a year ago. Signed up with Dale Alcock back in July and are building a slightly modified Falls Creek, from their farmhouse range. We are going for a modern farmhouse look. So far, DA have been great in terms of communication, just a bit frustrating in regards to progress. I guess like everyone, we are anxious to have this house built and be living in it. This is the house we plan on living in long term. Slab went down in mid March and apparently bricklaying is starting on Monday. Just cant wait to see this house go up. I'll post our plans and progress shots as soon as I figure out how to upload photos on this thing??? We're a few month behind you, building with RedInk, its a floor plan we drew ourselves. Plans look nice... I'm curious, are you guys on mains water and sewerage or do you need rainwater tanks and on site waste management? Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 5Apr 27, 2013 11:03 pm I LOVE it! Totally jealous of your kitchen/larder/mudroom/huge storeroom setup Our Custom Dale Alcock build in the Village at Wellard https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78620 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 6Apr 27, 2013 11:07 pm My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 7Apr 27, 2013 11:11 pm thanks for the feedback guys lowerchittering, we are on mains water, but had to install our own septic tank. our site costs were huge! wellard2ndtimers, yes storage was a huge factor for this house. our last house had very little. not sure if you can see in the plans, but we took some space out of the master, leaving a 3.6m recess in the dining. we plan to put floor to ceiling ikea cupboards in here after handover. My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 8Apr 28, 2013 12:34 am Hi and welcome to the forum Great to see another Perth Hills builder and another farmhouse style build too Your plans are great - love all the storage (but then I am a little addicted to storage ) and the elevation looks gorgeous. What sort of external colour scheme are you going with? Looking forward to following your build, it gets very exciting once the brickwork starts Our custom Gemmill Home in Bedfordale WA Build thread:https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53788 Timeline on page 1 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 9Apr 28, 2013 9:57 am Hi Tracyw, I found your post I know what you mean about starting the build, it seems to take soooo long but then once they kick in its great to see your house and your dream take shape. Great plan, looking forward to seeing it take shape the mud room is a brilliant idea, I know what its like when kids come home and kick off all their gear and mess and sand and more sand... Did you demolish a house? Or was it a vacant block? Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 10Apr 28, 2013 10:39 am Hi Soakedblonde and Scottydog, Its your 2 threads that I have been most interested in reading, being somewhat similar houses and locations as ours. Although, I thought we had a big house until we saw both your plans!! I have sqm envy! Yes, we did have to demolish a small house on the property. It wasnt worth trying to work with it. Our external colours are: Brick: Newstead (colonial range) Roof and gutters: Colorbond Shale Grey Garage door, fascia and posts: Colorbond Surfmist Window Frames and front door: White Rendered bits and downpipes on bricks: Colorbond Paperbark Only thing Im not really sure about is the white garage door. Not really crazy about this but wasnt sure what else would go with the rest of it. Tell me about it!!! It's part of the cost of creating that lifestyle I suppose. I'm sure once it's all said and done, you'll be to busy enjoying your new home that you won't even be thinking about the site costs anymore. Looking forward to watching it all take shape! Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 12Apr 29, 2013 5:18 pm Tracyw Our external colours are: Brick: Newstead (colonial range) Roof and gutters: Colorbond Shale Grey Garage door, fascia and posts: Colorbond Surfmist Window Frames and front door: White Rendered bits and downpipes on bricks: Colorbond Paperbark Only thing Im not really sure about is the white garage door. Not really crazy about this but wasnt sure what else would go with the rest of it. I think the Surfmist garage door will work well with the bricks. The DA "Homestead" display has a very similar colour scheme and I love the look of that house Our custom Gemmill Home in Bedfordale WA Build thread:https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53788 Timeline on page 1 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 13Apr 29, 2013 6:34 pm Hi Soakedblonde, yes the Homestead display is what we based it on, besides the grey roof and gutters. We liked the look of that house. My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 14Apr 30, 2013 3:25 pm Yah, just drove past our block and we have walls forming!! Our slab has been down for almost 7 weeks so its been a long wait for the bricklaying! I thought I would list out some of the structural changes we made to the original Falls Creek plan: - We moved the alfresco from in front of the living area to infront of the kitchen and extended its length - we increased the living areas to 33c and reduced all others to 30c - We added a store area at the rear of the garage - We extended the kitchen and dining out slightly to give more room around the island bench - We took a 600mm space out of the master bedroom to create a 3600x600mm recess in the dining area and will install floor to ceiling cupboards for extra storage - We took out the microwave recess in the kitchen and cupboards underneath it, aswell as some of the master WIR and incorporated this space into the pantry/larder. We plan to fit this out after handover and will house all our appliances, inc microwave, toaster etc. We will also have an area in their to charge all the phones, ipads etc. - we changed the window in the dining area to a 30c 3 stacker sliding door - we changed the sliding door in the lounge area to 30c and the kitchen window also to sit level with this. My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 15Apr 30, 2013 5:10 pm Like some of you, we are also going for a somewhat shaker/provincial kitchen. Here are some of our choices: my pride and joy, a 900mm ilve nostalgia in matt black 30mm Caeserstone benchtop in ice snow cupboard doors in matt white kitchen splashback tile kitchen cupboard handles in antique pewter. not sure whether to use the matching knobs for the overhead cupboards instead of the handles? rangehood is concealed under a fixed panel and sits higher and sticks out compared to the cupboards on either side, somewhat like this... They are called BISELADO BLANCO BRILLO 10X20 cm. The handles are actually from sth africa. We were there at xmas time and after having no luck finding any here i had a look there. I think they are called 'Bastion'. You may be able to get them here as im pretty sure they are just made in china. I have seen kitchens with handles and knobs and surprisingly it works, I think either way would work well. I'm jealous of your tile, I couldn't get a decent subway tile from the tile shop I had to choose from, but yours will look fantastic. I believe my rangehood will be similar to yours, hidden under a fixed panel but mines a pull out. Nice oven, love it in black! Re: Building with DA in the Perth Hills 20May 04, 2013 10:00 pm Before I forget, with your mixer just double check that the water pressure in Sth Africa is the same as in Australia. We know someone who imported all their taps from Germany but the pressure is different there, so they had to change all the washers.
