Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 23, 2013 11:07 am I need to attach a gate to a brick wall. The gate is 1.4m wide, 1.6m high and weighs about 40kg (steel frame and Merbau timber cladding). What is the best way to securely attach this gate to the brick wall? 1. use Dynabolts or chemical anchoring (or both)? 2. if Dynabolts are best, what length would you use and how many per hinge (I can use up to four)? 3. would you attach a post on the brick wall to which you attach the hinges? I would like to avoid this, but I read this is the way to do it.... PS: I believe the wall is made of solid bricks Thanks Chris Thanks for any advice Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 2Apr 23, 2013 1:54 pm I have always gone with attaching a post to the wall with 2 or 3 dynabolts, and cant ever remember seeing hinges straight on the brickwork. You may find you have perforated bricks so you will need dynabolts only long enough to be countersunk into the post and about 30mm max. into the bricks. I use Tuff brand gate hinges, coach screwed into the post Arfur Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 3Apr 24, 2013 4:15 pm Hi Chris I depends on the type of brick but I personally would be fitting a post to the wall first with the right dyna bolt and then fitting the gate to it. The type of fixing required really depends on the type of brick. Reason being by using say 3 dynabolts (8-10mm diameter, 50-75mm long) into brick, you spread the load and weight of the gate across the entire length of the post and the weight is also evenly spread across all the hinges. Good luck, Cheers Andrew Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 5Apr 25, 2013 10:08 am I attached a gate to my home 15 years ago and its still solid. The gate is a colour bond prob only weighing in at 25kg-30kg but I dynabolted (3 x 6” bolts in think) hardwood timber to the brick then attached the gate too the timber. Edit note : I located the dynabolts into the brick not the mortar. Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 6Apr 25, 2013 10:27 am Hi, Needed to install gate between our wall & next doors ZLL wall. Bolted a post to both walls (neighbor was OK with this) & fitted gate. http://www.wenban.id.au/Files/Gate.pdf Steel frame with Alu Slats (NO painting ) Used 3 Loxins per post http://www.ramset.com.au/Product/Detail/85/Loxin-Shield-Anchors and hinges/locks from D & D Tech http://australia.ddtechglobal.com/ Gate hardware is available from Bunnings but I got ours as a kit from http://tinyurl.com/abtwzkn as they offered re-keying lock to one of our (many )existing house keys. Hope this helps. Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 7Sep 06, 2013 10:11 am I will be attaching an aluminium slat gate to a 50x50mm ali post, which is mounted to brick with 3 80mm ramset orange plugs, and 135mm coach screws to account for the fact that the screws will be sticking out 50mm (same as how nrh157 has mounted the posts). nrh157, is that a D&D Lokk Latch Deluxe you have there? I have bought one of these too, but haven't installed yet, any opinions of it? Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 8Sep 07, 2013 7:51 am Yep, bought a D&D combo kit from an eBay seller (Locksmith in Five Dock) as they also offered to key the lock to an existing key. Initially had concerns that the hinges might not cope with the gate weight (60kg?) but the specs seemed to cover this. Did have an issue with the length of the bar on the gate that goes into the latch, the post was 50sq but the bar is longer that 50 & being between 2 walls gate couldn't close, had to get an angle grinder & cut the length back so it would close - no biggie Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 9Sep 07, 2013 10:09 pm Thanks very much for that info. I've just realised that I'll run into the same problem, since the post is 50mm + 20mm gap = 70mm, but the bar sticks out 80mm, so it'll hit the brick and won't close. I don't think I can bring myself to just angle grind it off, luckily I haven't opened the latch packaging, so I can just return it or sell it. Thanks, you've saved me a lot of time and money. Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 10Sep 11, 2013 12:15 pm After doing some more research, I'll probably end up just installing it, and cutting the excess off, such as you've done. Seems like this is what Stratco do aswell, when they install the Lokk Latch against the brick. http://stratco.com.au/products/fencing/ ... ate-20.jpg nrh157 - do you have any issues when using the latch with the brick wall getting in the way? Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 12Sep 11, 2013 5:58 pm Hi, I think the bolt is stainless, it isn't showing any sign of rust. Took a bit of getting through with an angle grinder so good luck with your hacksaw. The only issue was when I cut it the end was a bit rough (sharp), am going to get a small plastic tip to put over end - should fix it. As for lock operational issues, for me it's a bit too close to bricks. I would have liked a bit more room, maybe pack post out from wall another 20mm? But gate frame was made up so didn't have the option. SWMBO hasn't mentioned any issues so I ain't changing anything now. Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 13Sep 11, 2013 9:52 pm I see, I'm now thinking to just go for another latch again, if you had trouble with an angle grinder, I probably don't stand a chance with a hack saw. Only problem is, I can't seem to find a latch that will fit within the 50mm space. I found the D&D LokkLatch Magnetic (which has a handle bit on the gate part away from the bricks) but the latch bit seems to protrude past the post aswell. http://au.ddtechglobal.com/product/lokklatch_magnetic I might have to try and chip away the brick or something like that. Thanks again for the info. Re: Ataching a gate to brick wall 14Sep 12, 2013 7:31 am Didn't really have "trouble" as it was stainless & it is tougher than normal steel. Is it really such a biggie to beg/borrow/?? an angle grinder & have it off in 60 secs? Got a life, just can't find it! I should have followed up on this thread.
