No point in having an alfresco that is open and spacious if you can't use it because of a harsh western outlook, or it gets no sunlight whatsoever. In regards to useability, I find an alfresco area that sits off a kitchen/dining area works much better than a living area. This is in regards to entertaining etc. With the plans show, I like the openness of the alfresco of plan 1, but the placement of the alfresco in relation to kitchen dining of plan two. But as others have pointed out - plan one seems to flow much better.
