With no information other than the plans I would choose the second location on the side of the house as it seems to be more shielded from the weather/sun. Re: alfresco to side or back 5Apr 19, 2013 8:15 am Would be good to know what the orientation of your block is. In saying that I would go for the first one. The alfresco on the second is quite deep and being only 3m off the boundary would be quite dark no matter what the orientation is. It's also 'tucked away' from the entertainment hub of kitchen/dining/family, also if you are entertaining you need to walk through everything to get tot he bathroom/toilet. The first design is more open plan and in my opinion flows better. Re: alfresco to side or back 6Apr 19, 2013 11:26 am I would go with the first one... You will only have a 5m backyard in either design, so the backyard could become an extension of the alfresco. You can reverse the design to take advantage of the sun. When we were deciding on a design, it was a similar decision. I think we will use our backyard a lot more now then if the alfresco was in the middle. Plus when it's built, it's a bit deceiving, our alfresco is 6x3m. Seeing it built, It will just fit an eight seater table and chair with moving space comfortably but butting up to the backyard I plan on extending it with paving or concreting. Make it feel a lot more spacious. Built a Hawthorne 31 with EB nessjeffdreamhouse.blogspot.com.au Building an investment now with New Living homes... We are at nearly finished... Just landscaping and driveway to go! Re: alfresco to side or back 7Apr 19, 2013 11:51 am Orientation of you block is probably the key consideration for the design you choose. No point in having an alfresco that is open and spacious if you can't use it because of a harsh western outlook, or it gets no sunlight whatsoever. In regards to useability, I find an alfresco area that sits off a kitchen/dining area works much better than a living area. This is in regards to entertaining etc. With the plans show, I like the openness of the alfresco of plan 1, but the placement of the alfresco in relation to kitchen dining of plan two. But as others have pointed out - plan one seems to flow much better. Re: alfresco to side or back 8Apr 19, 2013 12:21 pm I'd go the first one seems to flow a bit better - one other thing though Could you move the front entry to the middle at the front - between the master suite and garage, that was you could also have an door straight into the house from the garage.
