Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Black kitchens, pros and cons. 2Apr 13, 2013 8:55 pm I've got plain black laminate type cabinets and small ish decore sized gloss black tiles for splashback. not great. I wish I'd either gone for something mid colour or had painted wood cabinets. The standard laminate is not very nice. It shows lot of dirt and there seems to be marking on the laminate. not sure if it is a glue mark from underneath or whatever but they always looks streaked and water marked. if we eventually get the cupboards rebuilt to the way I originally wanted them I'll be geting painted drawers and cupboards instead of the standard ones. Re: Black kitchens, pros and cons. 3Apr 13, 2013 9:03 pm That's good to know, I think I really like the timber grain effect in black more than the flat so that sounds like a really good option. K, as a side note try using whiteboard cleaner on your cabinets to take the marks off. Spot clean first Sometimes the builders cleaners, use car shine products for handover to make your cabinets look much fresher when you get your keys and that can leave a film which over time can start looking like your cabinets are marked. Re: Black kitchens, pros and cons. 4Apr 13, 2013 9:31 pm hmm might be a film I guess. I've got a big bottle of whiteboard cleaner at work so I'll bring it home. it just looks like it's below the actual laminate. We had to change tiles, granite and laminates with 2 days til selection day as we discovered the original granite was nothing like the sample. if we'd had more time I'm sure I would have come up with a better solution than plain laminate. Plus I might have stood my ground about timber cabinets and loads of drawers. I was just so shell shocked from having to change the complete colour theme in my kitchen so last minute. the new granite colour was so different I /we couldn't get our heads around any sort of colour we could imagine with it other than black. But now after 4 years I can see even the wall colour( wattyl igloo) would have looked darn nice if done with solid timber doors/drawers. Am starting to consider going very different to black for the fronts if we do eventually get to change them. If we had a modern style breakfast bench type kitchen full gloss black cabinetry would have been stunning but ours is a little more old fashioned than that. My favourite lighting shop: http://online-lighting.com.au Re: Black kitchens, pros and cons. 11May 08, 2013 9:53 am We have a black granite benchtop, though not solid black as it has lots of white quartz crystals and opalescent blue crystals. We have light wood cupboards & turquoise tile splashback so it's not a dark kitchen at all. The only bad thing about the black granite bench is that when we get little black ants in our kitchen they are camouflaged on the benchtop! Re: Black kitchens, pros and cons. 12May 13, 2013 10:04 pm We are building for the first time and decided to play it safe. For that reason we are sticking to a white kitchen. My main concern with a black kitchen is that it would look dark ( I prefer natural light as much as possible) and also that it may feel dated quickly as the fashion changes ( I will be stuck with my kitchen for 10 years at least) Otherwise I think it is just a question of taste Cec1974 viewtopic.php?f=31&t=62412 Standard uninsulated double brick has an R value of around 0.7.
