We transferred 50% of our block to me (was previously just in DH's name) and had to pay CGT. Again no money was exchanged. In order to work out the CGT the ATO required us to get an independant valuation of the block. But as I said this may not apply to your parents...you could ring the ATO, they were very helpful when we had questions.
