Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Sep 17, 2008 3:32 pm I went to Kmart today to get some energy saving light bulbs, you know, the twisty type ones?
I had bought 4 new oyster lights the other day and wanted (needed) to get these bulbs for them. I knew they were screw-in ones, not bayonette. Anyway, that's ALL I knew, and I realised upon surveying the seemingly endless variety of energy saving light bulbs at Kmart that I had NO idea about anything else! Wattage, the size of the silver fitting thing, and the size of the white twisty bit. I ended up buying 4 packs (cause I need 8 bulbs) of these ones that are 65 watts (they're 11 in terms of energy saving wattage, but 65 in terms of the older style bulbs), and I'm not even sure if this is right...I thought somewhere in the back of my head that for lamps, 40 watts is ok, but for lights, 60 or so is better. I'm hoping this is right. Anyway, I also saw some (Mirabella brand) had on the side, a guide saying which type of light the bulbs were suited to...and the ones I chose looked about as thick (for the silver fitting thing) as a normal bulb, and on the side it said oysters, so...FINGERS CROSSED! If they're wrong I can take them back and get different ones, but I really don't want to do that because the electrician is coming tomorrow and I want everything to be organised and to not have to be running around buying more light bulbs afterwards and stuff. I don't want dimly lit rooms when the movers put our stuff in! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Which light bulbs!?!??!!?!?!?!?!?!? 4Sep 17, 2008 7:37 pm ok i'm going to guess your question
From what i know there are 2 common types of ES (edison screw) fittings, ES17 and ES27. googling has bought up more. I think the common one is E27 Does it say on the box of your light fitting what type of globe is required? I personally would go for a 15W CFL but thats because i prefer a brighter light. I am not a big fan of the CFL, they take too long to warm up. They are great if you have power problems (fluctuating voltages) but not a big fan 15W is supposed to be equal to around 75w incandescent. Most light fittings you can put up to 100w incandescent in. Without seeing what you are putting in though, its hard to know. the other drama you can have is that the lamp is too long or fat to fit into the fitting. This was a problem with older style fittings but as cfl have become more popular this shouldn't be a problem with yours (hopefully)the ones you have bought, do they look around the same length and fatness of an incandescent? Re: Which light bulbs!?!??!!?!?!?!?!?!? 5Sep 18, 2008 12:18 pm I just realised before that they say E27 and 60 watts. Well, I’ve got 55 and 65 watt bulbs so hopefully I chose right. Lol I didn’t see any 60 watt ones anywhere, they all went in 55, 65, 75, etc.
Anyway, thank you! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Which light bulbs!?!??!!?!?!?!?!?!? 6Sep 18, 2008 1:50 pm The electrician is right now as I type fitting the lights. Sadly, he can't move the powerpoint or install a new one in the wall we wanted, as he can't access the roof/wall to do it, but that's ok.
He's very nice. I'm in a net cafe wasting time while he does this thing and then I go back to pay him and make sure it's all ok. The bulbs he says are ok and will fit, but I can go brighter (say, 80 watts) and bigger, so that's good to know. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Hi - thanks for your reply. Yes I think 'Ill go for whitish with very speckly bits rather than pure white something like this. PS was actually 2008 I built the… 2 11674 That was always going to be a challenge and a test of patience. Full marks to your mate. Did you discuss the wet area near the trampoline? 16 17324 It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it.
