Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Aug 20, 2008 10:06 pm Hello Again!
I was considering putting in square brushed stainless steel down lights instead of the standard white round ones. I think they look a little more sophisticated, but am also worried about the dating factor - like the original gold downlights. Also my current white ones have a yellow tinge around them from the light/heat, does anything like this happen to the stainless steel? Thoughts and opinions very much appreciated! We will be having the round white ones in the new house but only in the meals/kitchen and family room. We chose white to blend into the ceiling colour. Good luck! Happy at Home Re: Opinions on square stainless steel downlights 3Aug 21, 2008 10:46 am I like the stainless as down lights but I find in a living area they tend to become quite focal so you end up looking up at them.
Do you want to make a feature of them or are there other things in the room that will be more of a feature. White downlights tend to blend in so you don't notice them. I prefer stailess somewhere like and alfresco or a bathroom maybe.. Just my own thoughts about it though......have you seen many homes with this colour? Regards sasha Hi sasha, I was going to get the square ones also. Problem is that the holes they cut must be spot on otherwise it looks really bad. I don't think sparkys care enough anymore it's rush rush rush. My holes were ok, but unfortunately not spot on. My partner talked me out of it, but i'm going for the circle steel ones. It would then depend on the initial holes cut and whether they were even (in line) Now we don't even look at our downlights, except when one of the gimbled ones decide to pop out of its socked and scare the pants off us!!!! So as long as hubby is happy to make sure they are even then I guess it might be good to go with something different. A little more cost but a good look. We also have a feature roof when we walk in the front door & hubby wanted the 4 lights around it to emphasise it (it is sort of cut out & stepped up) so maybe the stainless steel would make it look good......oh decisions. (lucky we both aren't Libran's!) Regards and thanks Sasha 1st time bldrs, fussy and impatient! Re: Opinions on square stainless steel downlights 6Sep 01, 2008 12:21 pm Hi there waterhaven,
The pros & cons: - white ones will always discolour with extended use. with good quality downlights, this will be prolonged, as the powder coating will be of a superior grade as opposed to the cheaper ones. - the brushed aluminium ones are the most popular at the moment. - the square ones must be installed by an electrician "that cares" In short, don't cut corners by buying cheap quality fittings, and employing an electrician thats a cowboy. If you avoid these 2 points, you should be able to install any fitting you like, and it will look fantastic! Hope this helps.
