Although he knew my dad is an electrician. Not sure how easy it would be for non-electrician, but it's just a matter of buying a special dimmer switch and replacing your normal switch with it. When I asked dad he just said to make sure the switch is going on the plaster not the architrave. To add in dimmers at a later date, is a very simple procedure. Even a first year apprentice is capable of doing this upgrade. In addition, even if it is in an architrave, the only problem you may face, is whether the cavity space is enough. Otherwise, it's no different. Hope this helps. Not that this is a problem, as you can usually change the globe to one that is able to be dimmed. Most "compact fluro" globes can't be dimmed due to the electronics inside them, however there are a few compact fluros now on the market that are dimmable.
