Anyone installed 8' led downlights? I was thinking of using these in our 1x lounge, 1x alfresco and 2x garage. At least less holes in ceiling..

I assume you mean 8" (inch, rather than foot). It's an interesting idea, and essentially doing the job of an oyster fitting, but recessed. There would be more glare than narrower angle downlights, but the glare is at just one spot, so easier to get your eye to avoid it.
For some areas, having a light in the centre of the room is less likely to cast shadows into your field of view. I was sitting in the living room of a house with conventional downlights, and having a hard time reading. The reason was that the downlight that was closest to me was actually behind my head, and shadowing the book, while the other downlights were too far away with a narrow beam angle to fill the shadow.

Do you have photos of your ceiling battens / floor joists to the top floor? Do you have insulation in the ceiling? If they are solid, it's going to make running…
